Source. I forgot to mention that, and that when I ran autoconf, it did 
detect SANE properly.

I did that too. 

I'll give the printer another power cycle tonight and see if that helps. I 
did power cycle (and the host computer) a couple of times in the process 
of setting up CUPS printing, but I didn't do it after I started working on 
scanning. Who knows..
