I finally found out that the stable version of hpoj (the driver for HP officejets) is .8x. In short, when removed both hpijs (both hpoj and hpijs are needed for an HP all-in-one), then re-installed with apt-get install hpoj=9.??? (whatever -- the latest shown w/ apt-cahce showpkg) and did the same with hpijs, it installed and worked perfectly. Now if I can only get Firefox to print to this (which is the default printer, but Firefox doesn't seem to know that!), I'll be one cappy hamper.
