I bought a HP 5510 last night and was up most of the night trying to get it to work. (I need to have a printer working ASAP and am close to returning this and getting a Brother 1440 laserprinter because it just won't work.) I am using Libranet, so when I hooked up the printer, I used apt-get to install hpoj and hpijs. (I haven't seen it specifically stated, but I assume I need both of these, hpoj to scan and hpijs to print -- is that right?). I am using a 2.4.21 kernel. The hpijs version is 1.5. Originally when I installed hpoj (again, with apt-get), ptal-init asked me all the questions, and within a few minutes I was able to use the scanner. Considering the last time I had tried a scanner on Linux was over 3 years ago, and it was damn near impossible to get it to work, I was excited. Then I tried to install the printer. I used the KDE control panel and pulled up the printer screen to install the printer in CUPS (if you haven't used it, it has a few more features than the web control panel for CUPS). The first time I did this, I admit I didn't read the instructions. I tried to install it as the 1st USB printer, and got messages that usb:/dev/usb/lp0 did not exist. I deleted the printer from CUPS, restarted CUPS, and re-installed (this time, in the printer list, CUPS specified ptal:mlc:usb:hp5510 --I changed the name to hp5510 for brevity). It installed and I tried to print a test page. I got the dialog that said CUPS sent the test page successfully, I pressed Okay to continue, configured the printer, and waited. No test page. I have uninstalled and reinstalled this a number of times. I am getting the status display (on the web control panel for CUPS) Printer State: stopped, accepting jobs. I've tried ptal-print and it cannot connect to the printer. I tried ptal-connect mlc:usb:hp5510 -service PTAL-MLCD-DUMP and I get a dump (included at the end of this, in case it helps). I tried ptal-connect mlc:usb:hp5510 -service echo and I cannot connect. It seems I can scan (some programs seem to have trouble, but the SANE gui frontend allowed me to scan an image in perfectly). I can use scanimage --list-devices and it shows up. If I scanimage --test, I get a successful report. I don't know if this printer has an echo service, so I don't know if ptal-connect mlc:usb:hp5510 -service echo is a sign of the problem or not. I really want to get this working, since it would solve my scanner/fax/printer/copier needs with one shot and because I like HP products (they usually have good Linux support and are reliable), but I have to be practical. I cannot waste a lot of time on this. I have to have a printer working today, and I have to get back to my other work, so any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks! I finally found out that the stable version of hpoj (the driver for HP officejets) is .8x. In short, when removed both hpijs (both hpoj and hpijs are needed for an HP all-in-one), then re-installed with apt-get install hpoj=9.??? (whatever -- the latest shown w/ apt-cahce showpkg) and did the same with hpijs, it installed and worked perfectly. Now if I can only get Firefox to print to this (which is the default printer, but Firefox doesn't seem to know that!), I'll be one cappy hamper.
