Hi mailing list, do need some help as I got stuck and don't find a workaround. Using Suse 9.0, I have set up a HP500X printserver to share resources between a XP and linux box. Printing (cups) works fine, no concern. Scanning doesn't work at all. Scanner got recognised and set up using ptal-init setup. But when trying to scan, sane, scanimage or other application do not find the scanner. I have run scanimage in a debug mode and got following output messages: ========= beuelerkiste:/usr/local/bin # export SANE_DEBUG_DLL=128 beuelerkiste:/usr/local/bin # export PTAL_DEBUG=2 beuelerkiste:/usr/local/bin # scanimage -d hpoj:192.168.0.4:1 --test [sanei_debug] Setting debug level of dll to 128. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi Hope someone can shed some light on this problem. I have a Offiject G95 using 170x jetdirect. I have ran ptal-init setup and created hpjd:192.168.1.100 configuration in /etc/ptal. However when I run service hpoj start nothing happens. I am running Redhat 9 with kernel 2.4.20-30.9 and hpoj 0.90.17. When I start xsane it can't find the device. Hi there I've an officeJet 6110 on my Suse9.0 box and it works fine. My problem is sharing it out to some WindowsXP clients on my network. When I install the network printer on a windows machine, I am not offered an officeJet 6110 driver. Even if you do a "Have Disk" you'd be hard pressed to find a driver on the HP CD that came with the printer, or indeed download on from their site. I got in touch with HP who eventually pointed me to support page detailling equivalent drivers for Office Jets. This suggested telling windows that the driver is a DeskJet 690C. But when I do this the printer does not print at all. In fact the only windows driver I can use that will run the printer is a straight OfficeJet but then I am stuck without colour support. So in short how do you get the bugger to work with colour over a network share where the server is a linux box? Help would really be appretiated Cheers Charles |

You do not only need HPOJ 0.91 but also HPIJS 1.5. After installing HPIJS 1.5 and restarting CUPS, your printer will be listed by all printer setup tools. My patch is only to take care of the new kernel module name "usblp" without breaking compatibility to the old 2.4.x kernels with "printer". There is no fix for any kernel/libusb/HPOJ incompatibilities. These still need to be fixed by someone. Till P. S.: My PSC 950 works with kernel 2.6.x. (PLEASE HELP!!!!) Oi, Finally, someone to save the day! (or so I thought...) Ok, this is what happens (PSC1210): -> Kernel 2.4.18 : NO printer/ NO scanner (could not connect while running 'ptal-init setup') -> Kernel 2.6.0 : NO printer/ scanner OK (ptal-print fails) So, I downloaded you patch for 2.6.0 and patched hpoj-0.91 source using $ bunzip2 -dc hpoj-0.91-kernel26.patch.bz2 | patch -p0 (is that it?????????????????) and did: $ make clean $ make distclean $ ./configure $ make $ make install that's when the funky stuff started: 1) after make install i got a 'nothing to be done for all' message on every folder 'make' ran... Is that right??????????????????????? 2) ran $ ptal-init setup still no printer: $ ptal-print ptal-print: connecting to device "mlc:usb:psc_1200_series"... failed! Tchau, Thanks a lot for ANY response on this. It's been a month or so that I have a PSC stopped here, just waiting! Running tar should create a directory hpoj-0.91/ and one of the files in that directory is an executable file (not a subdirectory) configure . I checked this: $ tar tzf hpoj-0.91.tgz | grep configure hpoj-0.91/configure hpoj-0.91/configure.in (Note that "tar t" produces a list of files in the archive, without unpacking it.) The recommended procedure is roughly $ tar xvfz hpoj-0.91.tgz $ cd hpoj-0.91 $ ./configure $ make $ make test $ su # make install # exit $ Read the file hpoj-0.91/README, which will point you to further directions in the doc/ subdirectory. I know better, when it doubt, build it from scratch. Sorry for the unnecessary post. While I'm at it though, thanks for all the effort on the hpoj project. The psc 2410 basic features work flawlessly under Linux (great print and scan quality), and good support/performance for hp multi-functions under Linux was the main reason I bought it. Summary: HP PSC 2410 usb multi-function, RedHat 9, hpoj 0.91 from scratch (not rpm), hpijs 1.5 from scratch (not rpm), printing works flawlessly, scanner not detected with scanimage -L. Well, I think I've covered the basics, and hunted through newsgroups and (some) mailing list archives, so here's the problem. I have a PSC 2410, and had it set up on a RedHat 7.3/Windows ME (of all things) dual boot. Worked fine under Windows, and after building and installing hpoj and hpijs, and updating ghostscript, it worked flawlessly under Linux as well -- printing and scanning. Tears of joy were wept. I then reinstalled both OS's from scratch, setting up a completely new (no upgrades) RedHat 9/Windows 2000 dual boot. (I have yet to set up the multi-function under Windows, wanting to first get it set up under Linux.) Sane rpms were then updated by an automated update program to frontends 1.0.9-2, backends/backends-devel 1.0.9-5.1. I removed the included hpijs rpm and built and installed hpoj (0.91) and hpijs (1.5) from scratch. I followed the same setup steps (following the hpoj docs) as I did before, everything responded as before, and printing once again works flawlessly using cups. I then went on to the steps I took for scanning (which were basically just following the steps in the hpoj docs scanning section). The scanner is not detected using scanimage -L, whereas it was before. I then started going through the troubleshooting steps, some important parts of which are summarized below. Connectivity troubleshooting ----------------------------------------- a) The original ptal-init setup process worked fine, establishing one device named mlc:usb:psc_2400_series which gets used by default without a problem. b) Restarting the driver (ptal-stop, ptal-start) shows no noticeable errors, and printing is still fine after doing so. c) ptal-devid, ptal-print < /dev/null, ptal-hp device, ptal-hp clock, and ptal-hp display all behave nicely (ptal-hp display shows blank, but did so when scanning used to work as well). --> d) ptal-connect -service ECHO fails, even when specifying the device name. I can't remember if this worked successfully back when scanning was working under 7.3, so I don't know if this should be working for the PSC2410 or not. If it should, then this is the only troubleshooting step I came across which failed. e) scanner.o is not loaded. Scanning troubleshooting ------------------------------------ a) I did not run ptal-connect -scan or sane-find-scanner before scanimage -L, and have tried restarting the ptal driver, turning off the printer, and rebooting multiple times with no change in the lack of scanner detection. b) /etc/sane.d/dll.conf has an uncommented hpoj line at the end of it. The hpoj line was added by the hpoj installation process, and doesn't contain any traling text or comments on the line. I also commented out the hp line just to be careful. c) /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hpoj.so.1 exists, and is a symlink as follows....... /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hpoj.so.1-->/usr/local/lib/libsane-hpoj.so-->/usr/local/lib/libsane-hpoj.so.1.0 /usr/local/lib/libsane-hpoj.so.1.0 exists, is owned by root:root, and has 755 permissions. These symlinks and files were (presumably) installed by the hpoj installation process (checked the timestamps). d) Specifying the device name, as in scanimage -d hpoj:mlc:usb:psc_2400_series --test results in scanimage: open of device hpoj:mlc:usb:psc_2400_series failed: Invalid argument e) Though I didn't do so before scanimage -L, I did run both ptal-connect -scan and sane-find-scanner later on. The former seemed to respond fine, and the latter, interestingly, found some form of usb scanner. The outputs were........ ptal-connect -scan ptal-connect: connecting to device "mlc:usb:psc_2400_series"... successful. (various scanner noises, then hangs, presumably waiting for input) sane-find-scanner # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that # you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter. found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [hp], product=0x3611 [psc 2400 series]) at libusb:002:002 # A USB device was detected. This program can't be sure if it's really # a scanner. If it is your scanner, it may or may not be supported by # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage. # Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports can't be # detected by this program. So that's it, everything seems to be working fine (other than perhaps ptal-connect -service ECHO......), and the sane backend stuff seems to be set up as it should be, it just doesn't detect the scanner. The easiest way is to download the drivers locally from the web. Then when you are prompted for the driver, choose "have disk" and point to the folder with the driver installed... That will also give you the most functionality. Using YaST be sure that CUPS and HPOJ are setup up to start on runlevels 3 and 5. Then, use the web interface http://localhost:631 to setup your device. Hi, I've been researching this for a while now, but I can't seem to get the windows drivers to install for a printer shared off a linux machine. I compiled and installed hpijs version 1.5 and I use cups. I also have samba. My printer is an Officejet 4110 With cups i can print a test page properly. I can see the printer if i put in the linux machine's IP from windows, but then it asks me to choose a driver. I cannot find a way to get the HP drivers to install for the remote printer. (I would like to maintain as much functionallity of the printer as possible). I've also tried to use samba by enabling cups sharing, but that also does not work as windows can not find the driver. Any suggestions on how I can get the windows driver installed to use the cups shared 4110? Thanks, Jake Nelson |

Dear Jerel Crosland: When you installed version .91 of hpoj, where did things end up? Are ptal-init, ptal-mlcd, and ptal-printd all in /usr/sbin? That is where SuSE expects to find them, along with ptal-cups and ptal-photod. Does SuSE say that CUPS will not run with an SMP kernel? If it does run then you don't want to use YAST anyway to set up the printing, or so the hpoj documentation says. I successfully set up my OfficeJet V40 to print and scan using the CUPS web interface. You might also want to check the archives, there used to be problems with hpoj and SMP kernels, but I thought that had been fixed. Laurence Keefe |

Hello, everybody I just happened to bump into this website and this email link. I wanted to speak to you about HP USB scanners. I bought a scanjet 4600 just 2 months ago. There isn't a linux driver , I can't use it on my Linux PC. I have written email, written regular letters, and even joined a SANE developer list. HP straight out says they don't support Linux. Now, I see this website saying HP is trying to support a linux driver for the OfficeJet. Well, Why won't they support/create a linux driver for USB scanners ? HP makes $80 million a yr, why can't they hire a couple of linux programmers and create a working linux driver for scanners? It's very frustrating to read articles and ads in magazines where HP brags about supporting linux, but then having them tell me straight out that they DON'T support linux. Right after I spent my hard-earned money on one of their scanners. -- Eddie Colon Bayamon, PR 00959 "The best things in life are not things." |

Oi, kernel 2.6.x has the module "usblp" for USB printers and not "printer" any more. To make the "ptal-init" script compatible to both 2.4.x and 2.6.x kernels I have made a patch. You can get it on http://www.linuxprinting.org/till/tmp/hpoj-0.91-kernel26.patch.bz2 Till |
