It may be that printtool changed one or more of your driver settings when you added the extra gs option. If you still have trouble, can you post the relevant section of your /etc/printcap file and the contents of the postscript.cfg file that is in the spool directory for the driver you're using? You can use a text editor to open postcript.cfg. ---------- joe |

Hi all. I am interested in getting my HP Officejet 600 working under Linux. I am currently running kernel version 2.4.0-test8. I found some patches against hpoj-0.6 for 2.4 support in the mailing list archive but I don't seem to be able to get them in a form suitable for applying. I tried using print from the geocrawler archive page and then saving the result but it doesn't apply cleanly. Could someone please email me the latest patches or perhaps point to me somewhere I could download them from. Thanks, Nick. |

Hi, Barry. You can print but not scan through Samba. Set it up the way you would any other Samba-connected printer, using the DeskJet 550C ghostscript driver. Hi, I have just set up samba on linux to access my windows 98 pc files. I have an OfficeJet R45 on the windows pc which is shared, and I wondered if I can use the HPOJ driver to print to it (or maybe even scan?) or must it be physically connected to the linux pc? I know very little about linux and less about setting up printers on it so apologies if this is a stupid question and please don't assume any knowledge in any answers you give. Thanks a lot, Barry. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Hi again: I created and saved the file gamma.ps as you indicated in the e-mail. Also, I entered the extra gs option... you wrote. When I sent the file to print, and started to print, I saw the HP 1150C panel and it said more or less. "Normal printing". (I said: YES!) However, the printer continued and it printed the following message in stair-stepping text: Error: /undefinedfilename in (gs) Operand stack: Execution stack: %interp_exit After this, the printer printed the file I sent, but it also was too dark. I saw the HP 1150C panel and it had the "Quality" option. Any idea about it? Thanks in advanced. Marco Becerril _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? To use gamma.ps, create and save the file first, then change your driver settings in printtool. To create the file: Copy the part between the lines below to a text file and save it as /usr/local/etc/gamma.ps Note: In case the lines wrap, there are only two lines of text in this version of the file. The second line starts with the first "{0.333 exp}" and ends with "setcolortransfer". cut------------------------------------------- %! {0.333 exp} {0.333 exp} {0.333 exp} {0.333 exp} currenttransfer setcolortransfer cut------------------------------------------- Setting ownership and permissions for gamma.ps: ]$ su give root password cd /usr/local/etc chown root:root gamma.ps chmod 644 gamma.ps Changing your printtool settings: In printtool, there is a line marked "Extra gs options". You will find that by clicking on your printer driver name, then clicking edit, then click select. Enter this on the 'extra gs options' line: "gs /usr/local/etc/gamma.ps" (without the quotes). Make sure printtool doesn't change any of your other settings. After all this, restart lpd using the printtool menu item. You don't need to restart lpd if you are only modifying 'gamma.ps'. I hope this fixes it for you. Please let us know how well it works. ------- Joe |

This was the first thing I tried, although I didn't go to 5000 or 10000. I think I just tried 1500 (I multiplied all the timeout constants by 3). Unfortunately there was a gap right at the place where it became interesting (where it changes from event9/get_nibble/event11/event6 to mlcpp_intr). If you happened to save other debug logs (or if you try this again), could you check to see if any of the other logs show this transition better? If you see a line such as "get_nibble(c60b_intr c60b1160", that is a sign of a gap. It occurred to me that after we set event 7 or 12 (nAutoFd=0) in get_nibble, perhaps the peripheral doesn't respond with event 9 (nAck=0) until after we drop out of the poll loop contained within the PAR_WAIT_SET_CLEAR macro. I don't know how long it is until mlcpp_intr gets called again to retry the poll loop, but perhaps the peripheral times out in the meantime and backs out of event 9, such that we time out for event 9. To test this theory, please try increasing the value of SHORT_WAIT, which is currently 500 iterations of the loop in PAR_WAIT_SET_CLEAR. I'm not sure what would be a better value, but you could experiment with several, such as 5000 or 10000. If it's too large you may start to notice that your machine gets sluggish due to spending a lot of time in kernel mode. Another interesting test would be to log the return code of parStatusRead() right before setting event 7/12, and again after "SET_STATE(l,9,BUSY_TIME);" but before "PAR_WAIT_SET_CLEAR(l,0,PAR_STATUS_NACK);". Any status line changes after event 7/12 might further suggest a peripheral-side timeout. David |

I like kwrite. The commands in the file aren't meant to be entered at the command line. When you create the file, save it in the directory that you are using as a spool directory for the hpoj driver. It will probably be a subdirectory under /var/spool/lpd Don't leave this line as it is unless "lp0" is the spool directory you are using for this driver: QUEUEDIR=/var/spool/lpd/lp0 If you are using another spool directory, change "lp0" to the name of the directory you are using. I like to use a more descriptively named directory. That's why I chose HPOJ_DRVR. You don't have to use that name, though. Hi again: I think I am at the end of the configuration- installation of this OfficeJet driver. However I need your help. 1. I checked the following in the step "Loading the parallel port drivers (notes and troubleshooting": # cat ../ANNOUNCE | /opt/hpoj-0.6/scripts/addcr > /dev/lp0 and the printer exhibited the "stair-step" effect. Is it a normal situation? (The Install notes say that "addcr" script may help). 2. I wrote the following command: # /usr/local/bin/hpo get OID_CFG_STATUS and I received the message: Error while executing request: 0x83 <Error Unknown Object Identifier> Then, I asked some help to the computer: # hpo --help and it said: get <object id> What was the correspondig id? 3. I read the mail: "Printing in RedHat Was..." written by Joe Piolunek, because I installed RedHat in my computer. I achieved all the steps, except the following instructions: #!/bin/sh The computer answer: bash: !/bin/sh: event not found Also I tried: # sh filename: /var/spool/lpd/HPOJ_DRV/wrapfilter and I received another error message. Note: I know the "!" character is employed to use a command again with a specific model. I suppose these 2 comands QUEUEDIR=.... IEEE12844DIR=.... must be written inside the file wrapfilter. Is it correct? May I use vi? Where do I write the last command: ${QUEUEDIR}/filter...? Really, sorry for this last question, but remember I am a beginning with Linux and Unix. Thanks in advanced. I can't vouch for other brands, but my suggestions would be either the OfficeJet G series, K series, or the LaserJet 3200, which was just announced on Monday. Despite its resemblance to its unsupported predecessors, the 3200 uses the same protocols as the other supported HP MFPs, and after doing some testing with hpoj I updated the list of supported devices (http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/suplist.shtml) to reflect that. Note that scanning is not yet supported on the class of devices including the 3200, but I'm working on that. David |

Try logging in as a normal user, not root. I think by default RedHat doesn't put /usr/local/bin in the PATH when you log in as root. You could also just try specifying the full path. For example, instead of "hpo devid", try typing "/usr/local/bin/hpo devid". David |

Daniel, could you please try out different debugging levels for ieee12844.o? That way we might have a chance to narrow down the problem. This module uses some weird combinations of 0x01, 0x02, 0x04 and 0x05 debug values with 0x02 being the most common. Which values do hang the module? What about turning on debugging on the ieee12844pp module. If you have some debug output which you think might be hintful (is that an english word?) please send it to my private mail address (and maybe damcha's - is that ok?). Another point. Under some circumstances (2.4) I have an extreme latency before scanning starts - did you ever tried waiting for 30 secs? Burkhard -- Burkhard Kohl bu...@bu... |

Hi Chris, > Please forgive my sending you an email directly > instead of to the mailing list but I did not > really have a question about your software but > rather a different question. Well, I think you could also have asked it on the mailing list, because there are a lot more people who can answer your question, maybe from different points of view and with another knowledge level than me :-) > Is this the fault of HP? Why do you have support > for other HP printers but not his one?? Is there > any hope with this model?? Why not?? Unfortunately it is very difficult to get documentation from HP about the protocols used with their printers. As far as I remember, the 3100/3150 use a different protocol (not MLC) than the other printers, and our driver is currently limited to MLC. Maybe, some time, someone will start hacking the protocol used with thw 3100/3150, but unfortunately currently we can not support it. Maybe a completely new driver must be written. You don't have a C compiler installed on your system. Use either Kpackage or Gnorpm to install gcc. Hi, Marco. For RedHat 6.2, make sure you have the "egcs" and "egcs-c++" packages installed. These provide the necessary "gcc" and "g++" compilers required to build the hpoj software. What is the setting of your PATH environment variable anyway? Type "echo $PATH" to find out. David |

Hello everybody: Firstable, thank you for this HP OfficeJet "driver". I think that all the HP OfficeJet Linux community is glad and happy, because we can print and scan in Linux with this kind of printer. Congratulations to you and all your team. I am a beginner. I have an OfficeJet Pro 1150C printer and obviously, I want to print and scan with Linux. I have Linux with Red Hat 6.2. I followed the install instructions, so I ran the first command ./configure and I received the following messages: # ./configure loading cache ./config.cache checking operating system... Linux checking for Linux kernel source... /usr/src/linux-2.2.14 checking for SNMP... /usr/include/ucd-snmp checking for QT... /usr/lib/qt-2.1.0 checking for gcc... no checking for cc... no configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH As you can see, the last 3 lines have errors. I suppose theses errors have a relationship with $PATH. Can you help me in this matter? Regards. Marco Becerril _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Alexander Zimmermann > Hello, > > 3) 2.4.0-SMP > kernel modules compile, but there're unresolved symbols when loading > them and I don't know which module to install instead of > parport_probe. With 2.4 kernels the probe function went into the lowlevel parport module (i.e. parport_pc). The parport_probe module no longer exists. At the moment the modules have to be loaded by hand. I hope this will be resolved with the use of the new parport_register_driver interface. For now you have to load parport, parport_pc, ieee12844 and ieee12844pp manually - using this sequence.
