Hi Fr=E9deric,

From v2.5 on HL7.org suggests to use component 10 of the XON datatype for=
 alphanumeric ids.

2.A.87.3 ID Number (NM)
This component has been retained for backward compatibility only as of v =
2.5. It is recommended to use component 10 Organization identifier that a=
ccommodates alphanumeric identifiers.

It's more a question about HL7 than about HAPI : there is somethingunclea=
r with the XON datatype. In the spec, section A.3.2, and in HAPI,XON is c=
omposed of an . However, elsewhere, inthe sections where this datatype is=
 used, the third components becomes. See for instance the following excer=
pt (samething at 3.3.5.13, 3.3.9.3, etc.).

    3.3.4.23  Clinic organization name  (XON)   00724

    Components:  ^ ^ ^ ^ < check digit scheme (ID)> ^ ^ ^ ^

    Subcomponents of assigning authority:  & &=20

    Subcomponents of assigning facility:  & &=20

    Definition:  This field contains the organization name or sub-unitand=
 identifier that is associated with the (visit) episode of care. For exam=
ple, the Allergy or Oncology Clinic within the facility mightbe named.

As my organization names are alphanumeric, I prefer the secondinterpretat=
ion.
