Brian, Your right, this patch isn't necessary. I'm not sure why it wasn't building the first couple times after I updated the source. But I tried it again just now, and it seems to work fine. Sticky fingers? Friday? :) - Gidado p.s. The shortened version, Gidado, is fine. -----Original Message----- From: Immanuel, Gidado-Yisa [mailto:av...@cd...] Sent: Friday, September 27, 2002 3:06 PM To: Hapi (E-mail) Subject: RE: [HAPI-devel] [patch] fix classpath in (ant) build.xml 'nother quick patch to build.xml, and everything is hunky-dory: Index: build.xml =================================================================== RCS file: /cvsroot/hl7api/hapi/build.xml,v retrieving revision 1.2 diff -u -r1.2 build.xml --- build.xml 27 Sep 2002 16:10:47 -0000 1.2 +++ build.xml 27 Sep 2002 19:05:00 -0000 @@ -22,6 +22,7 @@ <target name="compile_core"> <mkdir dir="${classes}"/> + <mkdir dir="${gen}"/> <javac srcdir="${src}" destdir="${classes}" includes="ca/uhn/hl7v2/**,ca/uhn/sourceheader/**"> <classpath refid="class.path" /> </javac> |

Thank you, the build file was way out of date. I applied your changes and also made some others, including the following: - "generate" task to generate standard message classes (needs HL7 DB to run) - "header" task to add MPL license header to generated classes - "zip" and updated "jar" to create the distribution files in the form used for HAPI 0.3 I also removed the code that wasn't compiling in PipeParser. This was just some old testing code -- it shouldn't have been there anyway. Please let me know if there are any remaining problems. I was not able to get the build script to run out of the box. My patch for build.xml is at 'bug 615057': https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=615057&group_id=38 899&atid=423835 Even with this patch, I'm still runing into problems, which are summarized as: * no class: ca.uhn.hl7v2.model.v24.datatype.CE * no class: ca.uhn.hl7v2.model.v24.segment.MSH Are these generated classes? Bryan, Thanks for the quick response.. very much appreciate it..=20 Curious to know how well this product is working out for people.. We can use the decorator pattern to make any LLP connection secure. Or, we could actually use the java's own impl of secure communication channels, like secure socket layer (SSL). alex6 |

Hi Werner, See responses below ... > -I'm looking through the Sourceforge hapi doco and cannot see > anything on prog stds. Are there any or do we use std j-dev > var naming conventions? There are some code submission guidelines: http://hl7api.sourceforge.net/submissions.html The only point in there about style is to follow the Java conventions. > -Is there an IDE pref (eg, I use WSAD and have a copy of > Forte somethere) - this would effect project code interchange No, use whatever you want. We should all be using Ant to build, but I think the build script is a little out of date -- we'll fix this right away. > -What test env are we aiming at? Whatever you need to deploy in. Some of us work and deploy on Win2K. We aren't particularly proactive about testing in different environments, but there haven't been any reports of platform-related problems so far. Some day when we have a testing team ... > -Can I hook WinCVS to Sourceforge in some way Yes ... see the SourceForge site for docs regarding CVS access. Bryan |

Alexei Guevara, a very capable J2EE developer, is going to lead HAPI's "JMS Integration" subproject. This will be a very useful module because it will make it a snap to use HAPI in a J2EE application. Alexei will post some preliminary material (e.g. requirements, class diagrams) next week. We are planning to have a conference call shortly thereafter. If you would like to involve yourself in any way please try to attend the call (details to follow). I particularly hope to hear from Alex, Werner, Joe, and anyone else with ideas to contribute. We will discuss Alexei's material as well as other postings on this topic, and assign tasks to anyone within earshot. Bryan |

Hi Brian, Lots of questions! HAPI is open source, so in theory there are exactly as many developers as take an interest at any given time. In practice, the vast majority of the code to date has been written by myself and Neal Acharya, with about half a dozen other people making valuable contributions in various forms. HAPI supports most of what you mentioned, the exceptions being v2.1 (which should be ready soon -- sorry Jeff, I know you're waiting) and the fact that it's awkward to use Z-segments. We're probably looking at October to resolve the latter. Certainly we mean for HAPI to be used in enterprise settings, but note that we're only on version 0.3. Personally I think HAPI needs a few more months of work before it's really solid. If you are considering staking a lot on it, my advice is as follows: 1) try it out for yourself to see if it basically meets your functional requirements, 2) load test to see if it can handle your volumes, 3) mention any shortcomings you find on this mailing list, 4) arrange a contract with someone who will be accountable to you to make the required changes as soon as possible (this can be through us or any third party). Alternatively you could have a seasoned Java developer from your team work with us to resolve any problems you find. We aren't doing anything with HL7 v3, however if you are interested in version 3, please check out the HL7 Java SIG -- this is their exclusive focus and they appear to be doing excellent work. The idea is to produce an API that is adopted as both an HL7 standard and a Java standard. HL7 allows "technical corrections" to existing standards (usually meant to allow correction of obvious errors that are discovered a little too late). This fall we are expecting more of an addendum than a correction. 2.xml needs names for segment groups, but v2.4 and earlier don't have them. To allow encoding of 2.3.1 and 2.4 messages in XML, segment group names are being defined and added to the existing standards. Bryan -----Original Message----- From: Brian Flora [mailto:bri...@em...] Sent: August 29, 2002 10:52 AM To: hl7...@li... Cc: bry...@us... Subject: HAPI Just curious as to how many developers support this product? And would you recommend the use of this product for an enterprise wide system, that would support hundreds of hospitals using various versions of HL7 from 2.1 through 2.xml, customized Z segments as well as sometime non standard delimiters and encoding characters. Also just curious as to your adoption of XML V3. Also have all the libraries been tested, in your documentation you note that there are some technical corrections to 2.3.1 and 2.4 was that from your programming perspective and when will those be completed, The versions of Hl7 have been voted on and approved and are a standard currently. What do you mean by pending technical correction? I am evaluating HAPI as a potential for a multi million dollar development effort and wanted some feedback tofind out if you would recommend such a project with HAPI?
