Hello everyone, As you might notice from the new list name (I _hope_ everyone still gets this and I'm sorry that this breaks your filters), the project had to be renamed due to a trademark issue with MySQL AB. The proposed deadline to deal with this issue was Nov 17 and the change was ready two days ago so I guess things are going to be ok, not that I was expecting problems, since I'm based in Uruguay and I don't think they own the trademark in my country, but I figured it was the good thing to do since I used the name out of ignorance and it's their mark after all. The project is now called highbase, all old urls point to the new site, http://highbase.seriema-systems.com, and I have a new geeklog powered site that I hope will help me update more often. Everything else remains the same. In other news, beta-0.8 is out, since Nov 15, with improvements that make this run in Ubuntu without breaking compatibility with Fedora and other Red Hat based distributions. If you have the time, please test this, I've also fixed the Installation Guide (I'm installing myself based on this document now too) so you should have it easier now. Kind regards, Fernando. |

Hello all, The rc-script has been fixed and can start up the system even when ssh's private key is protected with a passphrase. I had to change the entry point for the cluster for this too (configurator.sh), so I'm taking a full week of testing before I make another release. However, the next one will probably be rc-1. I also need to update the documentation since I've changed configurator.sh to make it use getopts for command line arguments (it was growing ugly with the latest changes and it sure feels better now, and I, for one, find it more readable now). In the meantime, you can check out the svn trunk if you want to do some testing. Regards, Fernando. |

Yes, yes, I'm two weeks late and I don't have a Release Candidate ... But here's another beta for with just minor bug fixes, so I'm awfully close now! The only thing keeping me away is making the rc-script work on startup when the ssh key is passphrase protected, and I'm confident I'll be able to solve this during the next two weeks (I'm overloaded with work). The Installation Guide (found on the website and in the doc/ directory of the release) has been updated too. Regards, Fernando |

Hello all: If you've been following the blog, you'll know that I'm working on an erlang fork of mysql-ha. I've imported this tree into the svn repository today and you can check it out here: https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/mysql-ha/trunk/mysql-ha-erl/ This is still very incomplete, but the slave routine skeleton is ready. I'm missing arp spoofing (If I can't do this easily on erlang I'll use fake for a first release), IP address configuration and the master routine, mostly. Regarding the current beta tree, I'll be releasing rc-1 on monday, with updated documentation. I'm very confident you'll find it good and stable. Have a nice weekend, Fernando. |

Hello all: I've updated the Installation Guide to reflect the latest changes. You should be able to install the beta release following these guidelines. You can get it in PDF or OO here: http://mysql-ha.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/mysql-ha/trunk/mysql-ha/doc/ or in html here: http://www.seriema-systems.com/mysql-ha/docs/1/InstallationGuide.html Let me know if you can't follow through with the procedure Regards, -- Fernando Ipar - Director Seriema Systems ------------------------- Coquimbo 2236 - 102 400 6717 www.seriema-systems.com |

Hello all: I've created a new package in sourceforge's release system, called 'installer'. This contains the installer, the configurators, and the cluster code. The mysql-ha package (what I've been using for releases so far) now contains *only the code needed to run the cluster*, but installation and configuration should be done manually. I honestly followed the example of heartbeat and figured out that a clustering system is complex enough to require manual configuration. The mysql-ha package is now beta, and has been tested on this systems: *- FC 5 - FC 6 - CentOS 4.4 *with *MySQL* versions *4 and 5* It should still work with version 3.23, but I won't be testing it anytime soon. There is a known bug with the ssh-agent, it arises if the machine running mysql-ha suffers a hard fail and therefore the agent's sock file isn't removed. I already know how to fix this, but I'm pushing this for the next release, since I wanted to keep this as simple as possible and just focus on the restructure. The doc/ directory includes the Installation Guide in pdf, and you can also get it from our project's web site, also as PDF and as HTML. If anyone reading this has a knowledge of DocBook and has some spare time, I would like to make the documentation available in sources too, so people can generate whatever format they want. I use OpenOffice and odt as the original format and export to PDF and HTML from there. Please note that I am updating the docs every two releases or so. Work will now focus on getting the mysql-ha package to stable within a reasonable timeframe (No more than two months, I hope we'll see our first release candidate by late February), while we continue to improve the installer package as a long term goal. Notice that the installer package is still alpha and has been numbered version 0.1.0. My idea was to isolate the unstable code (the configuration scripts) from the cluster code, so people can choose what they want to try. The installer package includes mysql-ha, so you don't need to download both packages if you want to try the automatic installer. Greetings, earthlings! I start testing on CentOS 4.4 w/MySQL 4.1 today. I'm doing this on paralell with FC5/MySQL 5, so expect a lot of commits and maybe a couple of minor releases this week. I'm doing a feature freeze now, with a complete focus on achieving stability. Let's hope we can get to beta before my summer kicks in, because my productivity drops with the heat.. Hello all, I don't have my CentOS test environment ready yet because the power source of one of my boxes died yesterday. I expect to get a replacement by Thursday and I should be up and running then. Tonight I commited to svn a version with working support for sudo. Sudo is not a requisite, if it's not found, the code falls back to the original behavior (this needs to be tested and is the reason why I don't have a release yet), but if it's available on the host, the mysqlha user and group are created (the group is created automatically in red hat and perhaps in other distros, I do this just in case). This mysqlha user is then grante permission through sudo to run, without being prompted for a password, all the privileged commands we need for the cluster to work. This, along with the support for the ssh-agent and passphrase protected private keys introduced in the last release, are great improvements on the security of the system. I'll be back with more news tomorrow or on Thursday. Checkout from svn if you want to be up to date with the code. Both the installation guide and the hacking guide will be updated for the next release, since they'd be obsolete with all these changes. Hello all. Leandro: I'll have a CentOS test environment ready by thursday. I'll let you know then. I'm using the list instead of your private address for documentation purposes :) Let me know if you found the installation manual useful in any way. Alpha-0.6.4 is out today. I've changed the number, trying to get into a saner line (so our first stable release is actually 1.0). This includes important fixes to setup_replication.sh: - there was a mysql password hardcoded that prevented the replicate.do.db feature from working anywhere but on the original test system (it's a good thing I format my test systems regularly!). - there was a problem with the way the replication privilege was granted on the master. we now do our best to get the slave's fqhn, which _might_ be the host name used in mysql's connections (it might not, since it's probably the first host name that appears associated to the local ip on the /etc/hosts file on the slave. I haven't confirmed this yet. If I do, I'll update the code again). - We have a working rc-script now, though it still could use some refactoring. - We have better handling of the MYSQLHA_HOME environment variable. Happy clustering! -- Fernando Ipar - Director Seriema Systems ------------------------- Coquimbo 2236 - 102 400 6717 www.seriema-systems.com |

Yes, that would be great. The things we use from the system shouldn't change too much from FC5 to=20 RHEL4. As for MySQL 4.1, it will be good to know how this works with that=20 version. The only thing that changes from version to version and that cou= ld be broken in our code is the way we detect if the slave thread is running= . My recommendation would be to: * Skip the install.sh script, since it probably won't work on that system. * Build and install fake * Create a mysql-ha.conf file (you can use configuration-wrapper.sh for this) * Test the cluster by running ./configurator.sh directly on the slave, as I'm still working on the init script (it starts properly, but the stop is not reliable). I don't have access to RHEL4, but I can get a test system with CentOS 4=20 by next week, and that should be binary compatible. If you're willing to test it on your setup I'll install CentOS on my=20 boxes and start working out the bugs as we come across them. I can also write documentation on how to perform a manual installation=20 (skipping install.sh) if you think that will help you (I was planning to=20 do this anyway and this would be a great opportunity to test the results). I didn't expect to make a new release on the alpha-6 series, but these fixes were needed: - file permission issues prevented parts of the installation script from working - configuration-wrapper.sh wasn't working OK if it fell back to configuration-menu.sh The installation is one step closer now, just wait for alpha-7 ... regards |

Hello earthlings! The wxPython based configuration script is ready and apparently working, tooltips and all. Now we're on to alpha-7. This release will include a working failover in FC5. At the current code ratio, we might get to that release earlier than I thought :) Regards, |

I've added a new configurator to the svn repository, based on wxPython. This is pre-alpha material, 'designed' with glade, and is just a proof of concept. TODO: - Preload default values where available - Use tooltips as help with the msg files - Redesign the Sizer to fit a proper screen (I'm on 1280x768 and it doesn't fit, so go on and laugh at me :)) - Allow the configurator to load the screen with an existing mysql-ha.conf file, in order to reconfigure an existing system. I hope to do al this RSN, I'm getting used to wxPython faster than I thought I would, so keep your fingers crossed!. Regards, ps. no new release until this configurator is usable.. |

I made a mistake on the 6.1 release regarding the svn repository. The configuration-wrapper.sh file (which was included on the release) was not added to the repository until today. I'll begin working on the X based configurator now. Regards, |

Alpha-6.1 is out, marking the beginning of what I hope will be some great improvements on the configuration scripts. Changes for this version include: - Most user messages have been moved to text files - A new dialog-based configuration script has been added - configuration-wrapper.sh was created. If dialog is detected the new script is started, otherwise the old one is used instead. TODO: - Take advantage of the file based messages for I18n - Create an X based configurator - Test all three configurators and close this part of the package so we can move along Estimated timeframe for this work: two weeks. As usual, testing is more than welcome and should now be focused on setup_replication.sh an configuration-wrapper.sh. Kind regards, Fernando. |
