The mail program resides in /usr/bin/mail, not in /bin/mail on my system. Maybe a arch specific configuration file for those things?

See my comment regarding compat.sh. I'll try to use type and/or which to get the path for the files I use automatically, but if the user
has to edit anything manually, it should be on that file.
