Local variables

I'm looking for a way to define variables that are specific to each file in the ring.  LPEX allows you to do it with SET DOCVAR (for example, "SET DOCVAR.<varname> <value>").  I used the Xedit SET SYNONYM to achieve something similar.  For example, to set the variable ABC I would issue "EXTRACT /UNIQUEID" followed by "SET SYNONYM ABC"uniqueid.1 "<value>".  It doesn't look like THE has implemented true variables like LPEX, and I can't use the XEDIT approach because SET SYNONYM isn't available (yet?).    Does anybody have any other ideas for achieving the same effect?  Thanks.

Have a look at the EDITV command. This allows setting/retrieving of THE variables, and can be global or specific to a file.

I completely overlooked EDITV -- thanks for pointing it out.

And if you'd like an implementation of UNIQUEID, post a comment.
