I recently added BACKUP KEEP to profile.the and put it before the SET COMPAT XEDIT XEDIT XEDIT statement. Several days later I realized that backup was off for existing files and on for new files. After much debugging, because TRACE R causes THE to loop, I figured out what was resetting backup.

COMPAT should be fixed to not reset BACKUP.

The documentation for SET COMPAT states that SET COMPAT should be the first SET COMMAND you issue in a profile file, and then other SET commands should follow. It is precisely for the behaviour you described in the bug report that this statement is included in the documentation.

That's not exactly what it says. Furthermore, there is no mental connection between Look and Feel and a setting like BACKUP. As a long-time Xedit user, I never made the connection! In fact, I think the first few SET statements of my old profile make perfect sense:
    'set macropath' path
    'set backup keep'
    'set width 100000'
    'set rexxoutput file 10000'
    'set compat xedit xedit xedit'

since they are in order of most importance.

Perhaps the suggestion in the doc should be stronger? I thought REALLY HARD before opening this bug report, even though it cost me many hours to chase it down.
