No

I'm not sure why, but MPEG-2 movie will not output a
file larger than about 2GB. I know the filesystem I'm
using will hold larger files, and the progam will read
larger files, it just won't output them. Is this some
MPEG limitation?

Looks to me like it's compile flags. I got the same
result as you with the default x86 build, then hacked
up the config/make structure to build for ppc, and just
encoded a 3 GB output file. Looks like there are some
endian issues with sound, but what I was encoding was
blissfully silent, so I didn't mind.

If anyone's interested, I'll hopefully get around to
sending a little patch for ppc, with the sound fixed,
and maybe with altivec enhancements, too.

That's right. May get fixed when we start generating DVD's.
