Is Hermes just a set of add-ons to Eudora 7, or is it an independent, free-standing app?

    Two questions:

    1. When I downloaded the Hermes files from Sourceforge, it appears to be a set of add-ons to Eudora 7. Is that correct, or is it an independent, free-standing app (and if so, where does one get that?

    2. Will the installation of Hermes on top of Eudora solve the problem that Gmail has just created for "insecure" applications, or does one still need to do the app-specific password thing?

    Curious,

    DB

Yes, "Hermes" is just an update to 4 files related to SSL. Updating those 4 files in your existing Eudora 7.1 installation, and possibly updating your connections to use "Required, Alternate Port" is usually all you need to take advantage of Pete's updated TLS 1.2 support in Eudora, and keep Eudora working with servers that have phased out older SSL/TLS versions.

Separate from that is the Gmail app-specific-password requirement. That's dealt with by signing into your Google account, creating an app-specific password, and telling Eudora to use that password. No software update is relevant or needed for that.

    1. Correct, Hermes is indeed a set of add-ons to Eudora 7 and nothing more.
    2. Hermes does not (and as it stands could not) solve the app-specific password issue.

I have a follow-up question: I'm about to install Hermes over my Eudora (Windows) application. Should I expect "hiccups", i.e., perhaps settings that need to be reconfigured? Or will the Hermes installation be more-or-less transparent?

Hermes should indeed be transparent. However you may well need to adjust some of your Eudora Profiles in order to take advantage of it.

Pete: Could you please be more specific about possible changes to profiles? I'm VERY new to this... Thanks!

Yes, please download the latest QCSSL package from:

    https://www.maclean.com/downloads/QCSSL_Update.zip

and refer to the PDF it contains. I have just updated it to include more and better information on configuring Eudora to get the best advantage from it.

I tried installing Hermes and got an error message. From the log: "[36BC:40E8][2022-06-08T16:09:15]e000: Error 0x80070666: Cannot install a product when a newer version is installed." Anyone have any suggestions? I tried copying the files from the Hermes folder into my Eudora folder (after renaming the one .dll file), but that doesn't appear to make a difference (that I can see yet). Thoughts?

It sounds like you are trying to install an old version of Hermes that requires a new set of Microsoft redistributables. The latest Hermes does not have this requirement. Please try the latest which is available at https://www.maclean.com/downloads/QCSSL_Update.zip .

Thanks for that info. I didn't realize that QCSSLs_Update was an update for Hermes. Now that I've installed it, is there some way to put it to the test? Eudora is working as it was before as far as I can tell, but I'd like to know where to look for feature upgrades/updates.

There is no "Hermes" available for us to use except for these QCSSL updates that Pete Maclean has generously created for us.

The standalone "Hermes" installer is just original Eudora 7.1, plus the 4 changed SSL-related files. The only change to Eudora is thus that it is able to recognize more modern SSL certificates, and is able to communicate using more modern SSL protocols. It is otherwise just the original Eudora executable files, and thus otherwise functionally identical.
