I spent the day comparing HERMES Mail to other eMail clients and, as it turns out, I know exactly how to position it in the market: as a competitor to Postbox. HERMES (as Eudora) had many of Postbox's features LONG before there was a Postbox to begin with... and I think we can steal their clients ;)
Have a look at https://www.postbox-inc.com/. It seems like every single one of their features, Eudora has... and nobody else. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Domain fencing? We've got that (but we call it BossWatch)! Summarise Mode? We call it the Content Concentrator! Tabbed windows? We've got them, too! Focus Pane? We have its functionality in our search!
There are a few things we don't have. Yet. So I urge you: read the Postbox web site carefully. If there's something there that, in your opinion, would be a good fit for Hermes, please don't hesitate to put it in. That program, more than anything else, is our competition. Not The Bat!, not Claws/Sylpheed, and certainly not Thunderbird. On one hand, Trojita could be said to compete with us... but only within the IMAP sphere, seeing as it lacks something so basic as POP3. In any case, we can steal^H^H^H^H^Hborrow their IMAP code (giving them appropriate credit, of course).

Yeah, I too have spent many hours looking at email clients (always hopeful that someone would resurrect Eudora) so I'm aware of those postbox features.
I considered switching to postbox when it was first released. I decided against it when I quickly learned that under the hood, it was basically tbird and not to mention it had no built-in Eudora data import feature.
In fact tbird itself lost Eudora import capability long ago. The only way to get Eudora into tbird or postbox is to use the Eudora importer that's a menu option in Eudora OSE. The importer did an OK job of importing but it wasn't perfect.
This is why I suggested that Hermes have the capability of importing from tbird, and now postbox too. If Hermes could import from tbird and PB, we could get some of them over to Hermes.
I dunno what's different (if anything) about postbox mail, address book, or other settings, from tbird.

I never liked the tbird or postbox "skin" either.....especially the current tbird skin....postbox is much better in this regard. I'll take Eudora's "old" look any day. I think it's imperative to keep the look & feel of Hermes as close to the original Eudora as possible. Otherwise, Hermes will quickly be accused of being another Eudora wannabe.
