HERMES Mail not working with Charter email account

I downloaded and installed HERMES Mail recently from this site. I appreciate that someone is moving forward with reviving and improving on Eudora.

HERMES Mail was initially glitchy with certificates when used with Gmail and Outlook. That was easily fixed by going into the Certificate Information Manager, selecting the skulled/bad certificate and added it to User Trusted Certificates.

Its quite a different story with my Charter email account. There are no bad certificates listed and the SMTP/POP settings (mobile.charter.net) are configured no differently than they are in Thunderbird and Pandora where the Charter account works just fine. Here are the errors I get whether I am sending or checking mail using HERMES:

    -----------Sending Mail--------------
SSL Negotiation Failed: The connection with the server has been lost.
    Cause: (5)

    Error reading from network
Cause: Connection closed by foreign host. (0)
    -----------End of Sending Mail-------

    -----------Checking Mail-------------
SSL Negotiation Failed: The connection with the server has been lost.
    Cause: (5)

    Error reading from network
Cause: Connection closed by foreign host. (0)
    -----------End of checking Mail-------

I downloaded and installed the HERMES SSL extensions from Sourceforge which didn’t change a thing with respect to sending or receiving mail from Charter. G Mail and Outlook still work just fine.

Is there some other setting or tweak I am missing in HERMES? I’m at a complete loss here.

    Thanks

      I will look into it.

Ron, As a minimum you will need to add the following to the relevant section of your Eudora.ini file:

    SSLSMTPAlternatePort=587

Eudora's default SSL port for SMTP is 465 while Charter uses 587. There should be no difficulty with POP as Charter uses the standard port 995.

Please see if this helps you with receiving mail. If it does not then I will investigate further.

Edited the Eudora.ini file. Port 587 is now being used as reported in "Last SSL Info." However, nothing has changed. I get the same exact errors when checking and sending email. Hope you can help.

Okay, I was half expecting this. I will work on it further...

I am unable to complete a connection to mobile.charter.com with Hermes QCSSL as it stands no matter how I configure it. It absolutely has to be possible to make it work but it looks as though it will require changes to the QCSSL code. I will continue to work on it but please be prepared for the task to take a while.

Thank you very much for checking into this. I figured something was up. All my other mail clients have no problem using SSL on mobile.charter.net. However, my preferred email client has always been Eudora. Bringing it back to life would be a blessing.

I also have the very same problem with my work account. I was preparing to write about it, when I saw Ron post.
Hermes (and, earlier, the patch, which behaved in the same way) works well with commercial providers, but not with this account.
I also tried what Pete suggested to Ron to no avail.

All other clients I am using, included the original Eudora (with the known limitations and the usual tricks to update the certificates), works well (still using it waiting for a solution).

Of course, at the moment it is not a big problem, but it will when future improved versions of Hermes will be released. In that case I would be cut out the evolution stream.

Thank you for any improvement and fix for this problem.

Westnet/iinet seem to have changed their servers to a different config - and I can no longer send email across all accounts. I have tried all options listed, with similar results. Please help!

    mail.westnet.com.au or mail.iinet.net.au

    Hopeful - Graz

I realize that I have let this slide. Sorry. I do mean to attend to it and will up its priority.

Thanks Pete! I feared it had gone to the too-hard basket!

It looks like all email systems are switching to the ssl/tls option, not found in Eudora. Desparate here, email down across 6 accounts, and did not know why for several days as Westnet/iinet denied they had changed anything until a coule of days ago! is this something that can be fixed? People keep suggesting to switch to T'bird but in tests it did not import all the files from one email account properly, and it's a counter-intuitive program. I have literally 25 years tech support files across several addresses that I search for answers to problems, the thought of switching from Eudora is truly daunting! Please help...

Graz, are you using the Hermes QCSSL.dll? It does add TLS 1.1 and 1.2 support to Eudora 7.1, which allows it to work with most modern email providers. It sounds like there's an issue with charter.net, and possibly some others, but for the most part, Pete's pre-existing updates make most updated mail servers work great.

If you're not aware, there's a great and still-active Eudora support email list. You can join it via emailing join-eudora-win@hades.listmoms.net, and put Gazelle into the subject line.

    Hello Zo

I used the new dll, but had no luck. The way I am set up here is SMTP is with my ISP (mail out). Incoming comes from my different host sites for my domains. Receive is fine, send blocked. Error 530, 550 and certificate errors pop up depecding on the SSL settings (choice of 4). Pasting various ports into Eudora has the same results. I used to use 5.2.09 as it was small, and I can run 5 instances at the same time. Any other way makes work more difficult. 5209 has a file "extra stuff" that when pasted in comes up last in the options menue allowing for ports to be changed as per 7.

    Currently;-

Comp 1 XP = five Eudoras, none working. 4 are based on domains, one an isp related to my dialup (parent). All failed for 5 days. People looking for tech help are getting impatient but I am digitally gagged!! Mad concept...

Comp 2 W7 = two Eudoras, 5.209 with a working email on the ISP's server - no issues, one now updated to 7 from the Hermes site, QCSSL.DLL pasted in.

btw - SMTP sites are mail.westnet.com.au the company is owned by iinet and their one is iinet.net.au here

I could be doing something simple wrong - not sure. If anybody feels I am and can help please let me know how to be "right"! Happy to call anywhere - all I speak is English though : )

    Hopeful - Graz

ps - sent in for subscription as suggested, thanks!

A couple of quick comments, Graz:
      1) Eudora 7.1 is far superior to any earlier Eudora (such as 5.2), and 7.1 is also what's required if you're going to install the Hermes updated QCSSL (which actually updates 4 files in Eudora 7.1, not just the QCSSL.DLL file).
      2) I wonder why you use multiple instances of Eudora instead of multiple personalities in one Eudora.
      3) You should really ask you question on the Eudora support email list I suggested. People will help.

        Hello Zo

Only thing is you need proper functioning email to participate :)

I had only noticed the single file when it is put in the directory, replacing the normal one?

I switched over to the Hermes v7 types, and made a different directory, installing 5 instances. They all have (just) the QCSSL.DLL file replaced, and I have placed all my historical data into the correct places - all seems to be present. I have placed the esoteric file (in extra stuff) into the main directory giving a ports icon (at the end) to settings. I have tested t'bird and it seems to work as intended (no substitute for Eudora). Tell me about those four files - if I find the onther 3 perhaps this will work?

Why 5 accounts? Sanity I guess, and safety compared to all mails being in one place. Combined they run to around 6gb, and have distinct uses that sometimes need cross referencing between accounts. Multiple instances allow for this in a way I can relate to, especially with 25 years of growing into the work method!

FWIW, Eudora does well for a lot of us heavy-usage long-timers using a single instance and its multiple personalities + filters functionality. IMO, it's much easier to manage multiple accounts with a single instance of Eudora.

There are four updated files involved in the QCSSL update: libeay32.dll, QCSSL.dll, rootcerts.p7b, ssleay32.dll

Note also that QCSSL.dll should have a last-modified date of 10/29/18. If it's earlier than that, you don't have a working version.

As ever, I hope you find a way to join the Eudora support email list. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people there jumping in to help with questions like yours.
