Google warning of insecure email clients

Lately I've gotten emails from Gmail warning that less secure apps will not work because they are shutting down the allowance of such. I've had to turn it on with Eudora, but the end of March they will shut it off. They will be requiring "two tier" logins for email clients.

Does this spell the end of Eudora for Gmail? I have several accounts and several Eudora installs to keep them all separate. (Something that Thunderbird wont allow.) I'm a hoarder, I have email all the way back to 2002. (Purchases, passwords, important stuff)

I think Eudora is great, relatively easy to store messages in many folders and mailboxes for the purpose. Another question might be, Would it be easier to write a whole new program in the Eudora style, without using Eudora's base that seems to be giving the wonderful guys working on this project such fits?
(Thank you folks for your determination to keep us in Eudora!)

I have had the same message from Google. For the developers here this is what the Google message actually says:

On May 30, you may lose access to apps that are using less secure sign-in technology
      redacted@gmail.com
To help keep your account secure, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. Instead, you’ll need to sign in using Sign in with Google or other more secure technologies, like OAuth 2.0. Learn more

What do you need to do?

Email software, like Outlook 2016 or earlier, has less secure access to your Gmail. Switch to Office 365, Outlook 2019 or newer, or any other email software where you can sign in using Sign in with Google.

I greatly value my giant (20+ year) searchable eudora email database as well!

I have multiple gmail accounts as well as several domain names - what i have done is set up forwarding from each gmail account to my primary (and dominant in eudora) domain name (hosted with zoho, which allows both aliases and catch-all)

this preserves the headers so that my eudora filters continue to work sorting my emails as they always have :)

this only works for pop3 receiving - smtp sending with eudora through gmail will no longer work, afaik :(

Hi - I too am an old-school Eudora (for Windows) user with many thousand emails that I've downloaded with Gmail's POP3 option. But it looks like we're going to get the boot in a few days. Anyone have experience converting to Thunderbird from Eudora? Any other suggestions?

Right now I'm thinking of installing an older version of Thunderbird (that used to make Eudora conversion easier), then installing the newest version of Thunderbird on top of that one. But the whole thing worries me.

I'm open to hearing other ideas!

    Thanks,

    David

Gmail is likely to continue working with Eudora just fine after 5/31.

You will need to set up an "App Specific Password" for each gmail account, and configure Eudora to use that App Specific Password, instead of continuing to have Eudora use your main Google account password.

You may also find that Google will require you to enable 2 Factor Authentication in your Google account before it will let you set up an App Specific Password.

Hi David, I tried doing that, and although it did work, Thunderbird does not let you have Multiple installations like Eudora does. I have multiple websites/emails as well as gmail, which I have separated by particular installations to keep the mail separate and identifiable. (It's a major reason I love Eudora, besides total copy and save of each installation.) Thunderbird totally failed in that regard. If you only have one email, or set of email addresses you can combine, it will work... but not multiple installations.

Zo K, I am not familiar with "App Specific Password" capability in Eudora, nor "Two Factor Authentication" in Eudora. Could you give us some instruction on how to accomplish that in Eudora?

App Specific Passwords aren't a Eudora thing. You go into your Google account and you tell it to create you an App Specific Password. You're going to then use this password within Eudora instead of using your Google sign-in password within Eudora.

Thank you to all of you who chimed in (especially Zok, Raymond, and Grabowski)! I guess the real test will happen after the end of May when Google makes its big change. Fingers crossed that the app-specific password will do the trick. Like so many of you, I'd love to keep my treasured Eudora!:)

Well, they done it. And I don't see anything for "App Specific Password" to be had.
    Correction; https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833
I'm playing with it now but...
Unless the brilliant people here can add on security that equals the newer clients, Eudora seems to be done for use with Google.
Update: No. Apps, and the idea of Apps revolve around your phone. You can't "give Eudora app access" like a third party app would request access.

Update2: Just as I typed the above statement, Eudora retrieved my mail from Google. Insert "red faced" emoji here. Five minutes ago and before, it told me my Name or Password was not accepted.

If you can't find Google's option to create an App Specific Password, then you may need to first enable 2 Factor Authentication in your Google account.

I think your issue may be that you FIRST need to turn on 2-Step Verification. Once you have done that, you should see the option for App Specific Passwords. I did it and it worked! Good luck!

I just did it too and it works well.

    Is it still working?

This sucks. I would/will have to add all four of my google accounts to my phone to turn on Two-Step Verification + App Password (and do it for each account) and one account is always active on my phone.
I don't want google constantly checking my mail (and alerting me for every damn piece of crap message) much less tying them together to that phone number.

It would be in my interest to find a new client that I can have multiple installations (for specific separation of accounts) so I can remove the accounts from my phone to get back the Log In/Out functionality of the one that is public (so to speak).
Google already has too much control over my phone, it pisses me off.
This is the beginning of the real end of Eudora (at least for me)... unless the great minds here could make Eudora satisfy Google.

I'm pretty sure you don't need to enable any mail app on your phone to download your mail from your gmail account, even if there's a gmail account associated with an account you've added to your phone. Configure your relevant mail app to stop checking that account.
