SSL upgrade works fine, but accesses the server every 2 seconds

I copied the HermSSL.zip files into place as described, and Eudora no longer gives SSL errors.
However, the reading operation is occurring every two seconds instead of the 5 minutes in my options.

The error logs are growing so I think the read thread is crashing after each successful access.
Does anyone else have this problem ? (or solution ?)

I've not had this problem, but I suggest you install the full Eudora/Hermes pkg that includes the SSL extensions. It will prompt you to uninstall Eudora first. After that's done you can install the pkg. To be clear, this pkg is Eudora but with the Hermes SSL extensions included.

Thanks Walt for your reply. It does appear to be fixed although it didn't go to plan. First, the VS2015 distributable install failed, most like because I am a VS2015 user. Then before I could look into it further, Windows 10 decided to install some updates, after which Eudora seems to be OK, although it has on one occasion disappeared leaving its OWNER.LOK file behind.

I either run win7 64 bit OR win10 32-bit in a virtual machine. I still have apps that need 16 bit that I like...so maybe is related to win10 64?

Yes, maybe indeed. My Eudora is now running OK, with just one proviso, if I want to minimise it I have to click the taskbar icon. If I click the window minimise bar the taskbar icon disappears along with the window and I am left having to kill it in Taskmanager and delete the OWNER.LOC file.

I have also downloaded the source code and tried to compile it with VS2017. It fails every file with WINVER <0x0501. I have changed it in the only two stdafx.h files I can find, but without any success. Does anyone know where WINVER is defined ?
