Unlike Thunderbird, Outlook, et al., Eudora's market segment has almost always been power users. In many ways, it remains competitive and functional to this day, provided that the Hermes SSL extensions are properly installed. With that having been said, the evolution of eMail clients is such that many formerly "power" features have become indispensable, and new ones have, as it were, sprung up to fill the void. We can not afford to be left behind in this arms race; ergo, as soon as HERMES.EXE compiles, we must prepare for a feature upgrade.... read more
Version 7.9º of HERMES Mail will at least compile and run on Microsoft Windows without unfree dependencies. It will be able to negotiate a SSL/TLS handshake, send mail through SMTP, receive mail through POP3 and IMAP, and display UTF-8 mail, ideally using the Chromium Embedded Framework (hereafter, the "Framework"). Ideally, it will also check spelling using Nuspell.... read more
There have been whisperings that this project is insufficiently planned, with no roadmap, goal, or division of labour to speak of. This is unfounded, as the project plan was the first thing done, before a single line of code was added; that said, the plan circulates privately via eMail as a file in Spacemacs .ORG format, rather than being hosted on a public site, largely because it is in a state of perpetual flux. The rapid changes have recently died down, and I have therefore decided that it's beyond high time that the plan be publicised. Without further ado, here it is, along with my comments:... read more
Finished removing Qualcomm's Shareware Manager dependencies. Decided to also take out the registration pieces as well because they were heavily intertwined with methods that did things like setup the adware mode, take payments, and handle registration codes. I had previously thought that registering the Open Source software might be a good idea, but it really creates certain legal liabilities with regards to privacy that we don't have with sourceforge and traditional mailing lists.... read more
Eudora had many modes it could run in and I am currently untangling the mess of logic that was the Eudora Shareware Manager that ruled it all. Hermes won't have fifteen levels of subscriptions or adware. I am in the process of trying to make sure that there is only the full version and nothing will be hobbled and you won't be nagged to upgrade. I am leaving in the software registration process as it might be advantageous for us to have the ability to optionally register users through the software. Some open source projects do this. Of course, as an open source project we won't be terribly dogmatic about registering the software.... read more
