If you're not yet familiar with CVS, you can do it this way against releases: $ tar zxvf hamlib-1.2.0.tar.gz $ cp -a hamlib-1.2.0 hamlib-1.2.0-kerry $ # hack in the hamlib-1.2.0-kerry/ directory, leave # hamlib-1.2.0/ untouched $ diff -Nru hamlib-1.2.0 hamlib-1.2.0-kerry > my.patch It's always good to read the patch afterwards, and clean it up eventually. > Q2: How often should I submit changes? Don't worry, teasers on the list would say the next release will not be until next year :) I think I took a lesson, we should release more often, more early. Generally I make a call on the list (1 or 2 weeks) before releases. You can send patches earlier if some other users want to be betatesters, or if you simply ask for code review.
