Basic support for the K2 has only been introduced recently.
Try the latest snapshot from http://hamlib.org/bleeding-edge/
or better, checkout current development version from the CVS repository.
The README.betatester and README.developer files will should you for that
matter.

The K2 protocol documentation is available on the web, and the kenwood
backend does not implement all the K2 feautres yet.

I'm a bit younger (20 less than you), working in same field, 
running unstable (well, as far as my distrib is concerned),
been in Linux since the early days of 0.99pl15
So we're kind of having similar culture :-)
