Looks to me, looking at the manual (I don't have a TS2k) that: Tone: transmit a tone CTCSS: check for tone on receive and only pass audio on receipt of the tone DCS: Digital Coded Squelch Many repeaters will pass or generate a tone on transmit. This can be used (with CTCSS receive): a. If there is noise on the frequency, you can open the squelch and only listen if there is a tone. b. If there are multiple repeaters that you can hear on a given frequency with different tones. c. Many times the repeater only transmits the tone when passing audio, so you don't have to listen to the tail and/or repeater ids. d. On a simplex frequency if the users you want to talk to all transmit the tone, you only hear them. e. On a repeater that doesn't use a tone and passes any tones it hears, you can do the same as d over it. Many radios only let you select one tone, and then give you the option of transmitting it, checking for it on receive, or both. Looks like the TS2k gives you the option of transmitting one tone, and checking for a different one. I can see where this might be useful in certain places, but I haven't heard of anyone actually using it that way. Hope this makes sense and helps explain things. |
