Somewhere you need to add an output gain for the radio's audio channel 
(whether audio is used directly or not) - some radios support this (e.g. 
IC-7000).  Similarly, some radios have support for adjusting the "mic 
gain" (i.e. input gain of the signal path).

In the model you've outlined, this is not always in the content path, 
since this affects the AF signal level in the system, and this AF could 
be either content (when using analogue voice modes - AM, FM, SSB) or a 
very low frequency IF (when using data, image and DV modes).
