Hello all.
Well, a coding flurry struck and in its wake is some brand new code for
the Rotor-EZ and RotorCard interfaces from Idiom Press and the
DCU-1/DCU-1X from Hy-Gain. The supported protocol is called DCU, but I
named the backend rotorez as the Idiom Press products seem more popular.
The code is in need of testing with a real rotor. I verified the
strings are correct to another computer, but I have no rotor to test as
yet. Implemented functions are rot_get_position, rot_set_position and
rot_stop. The DCU-1 only supports rot_set_position.
Since the DCU-1 can only accept 0 to 359 degrees, any value above 359.5
is converted to 0.
Only azimuth is supprted and its range is 0 to 360 degrees.
Enjoy!

Okay, I got a handle on it now. I untarred it fresh and recompiled it, and you're right, Nate. It's confusing to have the radios sorted by directories named by brand, when they're actually sorted by protocol :-( Nate, you were right, once I found the right radio file, and determined that the max serial port speed of the TT Omni VI Plus was 19200, I set the radio to that and rigctl was able to communicate with the radio without defining the serial port speed on the command line. Sheesh... Then I went on to Gnome rig, which still wasn't working. A bit of playing around seemed to show that even though you can set the serial port in the config file (via the UI), it apparently isn't using it. It started working when I changed the serial port in defaults.h from ttyS1 to ttyS0 and recompiled. I'll let them know. I'll compile a list of radio functions via rigctl that don't seem to work and post them in a while. Thanks for your help, Nate! And now, I'm pulling the plug for the night, too... 73 - Orv - W6BI On Fri, 2003-01-10 at 20:33, Nate Bargmann wrote: > * Orv Beach <w6...@pa...> [2003 Jan 10 22:21 -0600]: > > I have a TenTec Omni VI Plus. Okay, I'm getting well out of my field of knowledge here, but the TT
Omni apparently uses the ICOM CI-V protocol.

Probably not until you do some preparation!
At a minimum you will have to change some #include path names and also
make some changes in the Makefile.am in each directory then rebuild the
project as though builing from CVS. See README.betatester.
In some cursory glances in that part of the project, I'm guessing that
the functions in omni.c rely on the common icom.c file.
Knock yourself out, it's the only way we learn. ;-)

My bearings are pointing me toward bedtime!

OK, so it's not tomorrow yet, and I promised not to ask another question today, but maybe it is where you're reading this, and I just have to ask. :-) I have a TenTec Omni VI Plus. HOWEVER - in the tentec directory, there are only two radios coded, the rx320, and the pegasus. By grepping for Omni in the source, I find the omni.c file (clearly identified as the TenTec Omni VI Plus within the source code), in the Icom subdirectory. That probably explains why, when running rigctl, it identifies it as an Icom radio. It might also explain why only a few of the commands worked when going through them with rigctl. Now it's true that Icom has a radio called the Omni, but it's pretty clear that the file omni.c isn't for it. Should I just move omni.c into the tentec dir and recompile? Or is there more to it than that? Thanks for bearing with me. 73 - Orv - W6BI -- Orv Beach <w6...@pa...> |

No problem, Orv! Answering your questions have caused me to learn more
today than I have in a while. :-)

At this time not yet. Looking at the rigctl source file I see that it
takes the value passed on the command line and stores it in a memory
location defined by the rig backend code. If not, it uses the value set
by the backend code at compile time. The problem you're probably seeing
is that the backend can specify a minimum and maximum port speed (Yaesus
are typically stuck at 4800 bps so the min and max are the same). I
think I read somewhere in the last day or so that the maximum speed is
selected as a default.
So, as a possible work-around I suggest looking at the backend file for
your rig and searching for the .serial_rate_max string. You should find
a numeric value associated with it. Then try configuring your radio to
that speed. I'd be curious if this works.

Last question for today, I promise :-) When running rigctl, I have to specify the serial port speed with the -s option, and it works, no sweat. When running Gnome rig against hamlib, I can configure the serial port in grig, but there doesn't seem to be a place to specify the port speed. (And grig doesn't talk successfully to the radio). What am I missing? Is there a hamlib config file someplace that specifies that? Thanks. 73 - Orv - W6BI -- Orv Beach <w6...@pa...> |

All help is welcome as the code will need testing "in the real world".

Well, it needs to be put in sometime so it might as well be there
waiting for someone to test it.

Some newbie questions - Are the rig statuses (statii?) on the hamlib web page current? If a rig status is shown in orange on the Supported Radios page, what's required to turn it to green? That is, what testing is required , and how is that accomplished? As a follow-on question, if during testing with rigctl, a function is non-operational, what's required to get it operational (asuming it's actually supported by the radio)? I'm specifically interested in the TenTec Omni VI Plus, but the question is a general one. Thanks Orv - W6BI -- Orv Beach <w6...@pa...> |

We must be on the same wavelength! I researched this myself this morning and within the past hour fired off an email to Idiom Press requesting a complete command listing. From my research it seems that the Idiom products may have an additional command or two over the Hy-Gain DCU-1. I hope to get a reply and drop some code into CVS over the weekend. I have a Ham IV and I'd like to play with this system on as well, but first I need to get the rotor off the tower to test it out as something was non-functional several years ago. Right now it's too darn cold to do tower work! > Can I assume they're referring to Easycomm, or is there some other > common serial rotator protocol lurking out there? Looking at the easycomm/easycomm.txt file in Hamlib, the two are definitely not compatible. Right now the two most popular protocols for satellite work appear to be Easycomm and FODtrack. The DCU-1 is only supported by Hy-Gain and Idiom Press as near as I can tell. Also, Idiom has the Rotor Card whihc is a board similar to the Rotor-EZ but for the Yaesu rotors and uses the DCU-1 type commands. Hopefully, there will be some code to test in a few days. 73, de Nate >> -- Wireless | Amateur Radio Station N0NB | "We have awakened a Internet | n0...@ne... | sleeping giant and Location | Bremen, Kansas USA EM19ov | have instilled in him Amateur radio exams; ham radio; Linux info @ | a terrible resolve". http://www.qsl.net/n0nb/ | - Admiral Yamamoto |

In shopping / researching, I found the Rotor EZ add-in control card for Ham IV and Tailtwister rotators at Idiom Press ( http://www.idiompress.com ) It states that its control protocol is the same as the Hy-Gain DCU-1. Researching the DCU-1 control box, it says it "has computer control with RS-232 pass through and is compatible with many logging and contest programs as well." Can I assume they're referring to Easycomm, or is there some other common serial rotator protocol lurking out there? 73 - Orv - W6BI -- Orv Beach <w6...@pa...> |

If you can't find an Easycomm or FODtrack compatible rotator controler, just pick another one and make sure you can get the protocol specification. Then we'll be able to make Hamlib support it! 73, Stephane |

My brief Googling revealed that the Easycomm protocols are supported by an outboard interface that connects to the serial port and the rotor. One such product is here: http://endeavour-usa.com/autotracker.htm Rather pricy, but there may well be others available and/or plans for a homebrew unit on the Web. It seems the Yaesu rotors are well supported and I'm sure somebody has interfaced the Ham IV type of rotor for azimuth control along with the Alliance U110 series for elevation. The trick is finding out how they did it. Another interface is here: http://www.nlsa.com/sasi.html TAPR had what appears to have been a more or less standalone interface called the Trakbox: http://www.tapr.org/tapr/html/kitsf.html A little bit of information on FODTrack is here: http://www.orbitessera.com/html/body_antenna_control.html There is a link to a downloadable file at the bottom of the page and a cursory look reveals the Yaesu GS5400/5500 series rotors are supported. There is FODTrack support in the Hamlib CVS, so this is probably among the lowest cost solution. Easycomm support also exists in Hamlib, but I've only found commercial interfaces available for $200+. In either case the Yaesu/Kenpro rotors are supported, so that's probably your best bet. 73, de Nate >> -- Wireless | Amateur Radio Station N0NB | "We have awakened a Internet | n0...@ne... | sleeping giant and Location | Bremen, Kansas USA EM19ov | have instilled in him Amateur radio exams; ham radio; Linux info @ | a terrible resolve". http://www.qsl.net/n0nb/ | - Admiral Yamamoto |

Since I'm in the market for a new rotator anyway, I thought I might as well get one that would be (eventually, anyway) supported by hamlib. A brief googling didn't yield much information. Can anyone point me to on-line literature for rotator manufacturers (if any) that support Easycomm and Easycomm II protocols? Thanks. Orv - W6BI -- Orv Beach <w6...@pa...> |

Hi everyone.
As I'm working with the ft920 code to make it more robust, I am
modifying rigctl to prompt for the VFO to read/set. In so doing I am
testing the return of parse_vfo for RIG_VFO_NONE. Unfortunately, when I
try to pass currVFO from rigctl, get_freq exits early as RIG_VFO_CURR
and RIG_VFO_NONE are both defined in rig.h to 0!
How can this be rectified? It seems that making RIG_VFO_CURR to be
non-zero is the simplest answer.
