Facts:
FT991 using direct USB connection. Running on RPi3, archlinux (hamvoip). Rigctl works fine. I can cmd freq changes, read back freq, etc. My C program runs and calls rigctl and I can see that running. No cmds go to the radio and I get the Rig busy msg.
I had this all working months ago and got distracted, now I'm fighting my way back.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Fighting this for days using several different USB-RS232 dongles with a variety of vendors chips. No luck. Finally got a cable with a real FTDI chip and it works. There may be more to the story with unipolar vs. bipolar signals, but I can say this cable works.
I know that on the Elecraft list the recommendation is for FTDI based chip sets and that seems most often associated with people running MS Windows. I've had success with IO Gear Polific based chip sets that I bought several years ago. Most likely the quality of the knock-offs hasn't improved in recent years.

You'll also need a RJ45 - DB9 adapter.
