Hi Salvatore, Sorry I took so long getting back to you - school and work are currently very hectic. Answers to your questions: 1) The a/b/g card is only ever running in b or g mode, and works with haggle::supsi_email in plainIP mode in ubuntu 7.10 32b, using sun's jdk1.6.0_03 in eclipse. Connecting via ethernet also works with plainIP mode in the same configuration. However, when I enable WiFiConnectivity, haggle is unable to enumerate the network interfaces. Examining the 'devices' hash in WiFiConnectivity @ 79 shows 3 entries (two of which are null), and the third is 'lo'. To see if it was due to the library being stale, I rebuilt the native library in this version of linux - this was (unfortunately) not a clean process (patched for NDA_RTA, patched sun's jdk's headers (jni stuff not building due to placement), and I removed the custom iwlib object files from the link since they are colliding with the systems libiw). Running 'iwlist scanning' shows all the interfaces in the system, and dumps all the available wireless networks to the terminal, so I think the system's libiw is working: lo Interface doesn't support scanning. eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning. wifi0 Interface doesn't support scanning. ath0 Scan completed : Cell 01 - Address: 00:13:19:60:18:80 ... Cell 23 - Address: 00:13:19:60:16:F1 By setting WiFiConnectivity.supported_devs = ath0, I get the following output from haggle (when java loads libnativewifiapi.so): 2007-11-01_22:34:10 (5) WiFi: 0 usable WiFi interfaces found. Which makes sense, since the only interface it can find is 'l0', which is not a wireless interface and is not scannable by libiw. With respect to win32, things get a bit strange: a fresh checkout of SUPSI_email appears to have fixed one laptop's connectivity issues (can now connect wirelessly using plainIP). However, this did not fix the other laptop: In win32, haggle is terminating inside the NDISWiFi constructor: in Utility.java, line 265, when it attempts to invoke NativeNetworking.getInterfaceIndex(). Additionally, Haggle 1.0 emits numerous 'WOAH' messages when used as a HTTP proxy on this laptop. New questions: 1) Does P2P work over plainIP, or is it exclusive to WiFi? 2) Is there a newer version of the nativewifiapi lib for linux? Which platform better supports wifi (or P2P)? 3) Are there newer docs on Haggle's architecture, and what the SUPSI_email branch implements? Thanks! -Tom Successful log post-fresh-checkout: 2007-11-02_02:17:42 (5) Haggle: instantiated manager: haggle.manager.data.SimpleDataManager 2007-11-02_02:17:42 (5) Haggle: instantiated manager: Hi all, I updated the SUPSI_email branch and added new features. The main ones = are the following: 1. windows services (wzcsvc/ndisprot) are automatically started/stopped 2. a popup signals a new neighbour discovery to the user 3. Haggle can be started outside eclipse via the Haggle.bat batch file = (need to export a jar file named Haggle.jar containing all classes when = a new version is deployed) Salvatore |

Hi all, I am testing the implementation of CAR with 4 machines and unfortunately I discovered that Haggle crashes with more than 2 machines. I have no problems in running Haggle with 2 machines. This is not related to the implementation of the protocol -- I disabled it for test the platform. The problem happens when I disconnect the radio interface of one machine to simulate intermittent connectivity. I follow the instructions that Jing gave me about the fact that you need to disable and re-enable the WiFi interface when you start again Haggle due to the implementation of the WiFi driver. So I follow this procedure: 1. I stop Haggle in Eclipse 2. I disable and re-enable the WiFi interface 3. I start again Haggle And then unfortunately I get the following error: ResourceManager run thread EXITING due to error java.lang.ClassCastException: haggle.connectivity.wifi.AdHocNeighbour @ haggle.manager.defaults.DefaultResourceManager.run(DefaultResourceManager.java:240) java.lang.ClassCastException haggle.connectivity.wifi.AdHocNeighbour haggle.connectivity.wifi.WiFiConnectivity.idle(WifiConnectivity.java:244), haggle.manager.defaults.DefaultResourceManager.run(DefaultResourceManager.java:228), java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) So it seems that the problem is in the Resource Manager and/or in one the class that it relies on. Do you have any suggestion? Do you have any experience about problems with more than 2 machines? I really appreciate your help and suggestions. I have a quite specific code question, but it seems this list may be the place to send it anyway. When writing a small haggle test application, I never got my DOListener called (added using addListener(...) in the AppInterface provided to appInit(...)). After a bit of debugging I found that there was never anything inserted into the dofilter_listeners HashMap in AbstractDataManager. Adding a dofilter_listeners.put(listener, filter) in the synchronized block of addListener(...) in AbstractDataManager thus made it work. My question is if I can commit this small change or if there is some alternative method of adding data object listeners so that I should leave AbstractDataManager alone? /Oskar |

Hi, As you know, I am implementing a forwarding algorithm for Haggle based on periodic retransmissions to the final destinations or to intermediate message carriers -- using a more hagglish terminology, FO carriers. I am trying to encapsulate all the code in a class implementing the ForwardingAlgorithm interface (and some accessory classes). I have a suggestion about the specification of the interface ForwardingManager (and its current implementation DefaultForwardingManager). In the current implementation, the setForwardingTask() method is called periodically by the ForwardingManager. However, this call is repeated at a fixed interval (set using a sleep with a constant duration). I suggest to add a primitive to allow the developers to set this value - I think that this may be quite useful for all the protocols based on re-transmissions to reach the final destinations (also using intermediate carriers). The downside of this solution may be that the creation of the Forwarding Object may be delayed (i.e., the first attempt of transmission of a DO may be delayed). To avoid this, another method may be added (setPeriodicForwardingTask()?) that is called periodically (with an interval specified by the user). Another alternative is the implementation of this mechanism in the forwarding algorithm (i.e. in the class implementing ForwardingAlgorithm). However, this is quite complicated, since the control of the list of the pending FOs is in the forwarding manager (in particular, the addition and deletion of FOs). I am really interested in your opinion about these design issues... Hi all, I would like to ask you if a sort of Haggle "simulator" for large-scale testing has been planned or if some of you is working on it. I am developing the implementation of CAR as forwarding protocol for Haggle and a simulator that allows for the execution of multiple instances of Haggle may be really useful. Hello Mirco, I'll try my best to answer your questions, embedded below: > Moreover, I often need to disable and enable the network connections > when I restart Haggle in order to obtain a normal behaviour. In fact, > sometimes, it happens that the "switching" between ad hoc and > infrastructure modes does not start at all. Restarting the connections > seems the only solution in these cases. This is necessary as a limitation in how we are operating the cards when in adhoc mode. When in adhoc, we assign a static IP to the interface as a calculated hash of the card's MAC address. Unfortunately, this staticIP must be released via a Handle that Windows returns to us. If Haggle is killed it is unable to release this Handle, and thus "repairing" the interface is the only way to get rid of the staticIP and thus regain normal behaviour of the card. We are looking into ways to fix this in a more robust way. > 2006-12-11_09:24:47 (7) WiFi changetoadhoc configurenetmode failed @ > haggle.connectivity.wifi.WiFiConnectivity.changeToAdhoc(WiFiConnectivity.java:441) This is the root of all your problems because if Haggle cannot reliably set the adhoc mode it cannot operate correctly to exchange information in p2p mode. This seems to be a recurring problem on many devices that we have not yet been able to figure out. Apparently this is an issue for some of the IPW2100 cards as well. I am sorry that I currently do not have a fix for this yet. On some cards, if you copy line 435 and paste it just before line 441, the setting of the mode AFTER setting the SSID might work. This seems to go against the official driver spec for what should happen, but it might work. I'll try to figure out what else I can do to remedy this. In the mean-time, please let me know what else you've tried that does or does not work. -Jing |

Hi all, I have some problems with the installation of Haggle. I have been trying to install and run Haggle during the past days but I am not still able to transmit messages using the demo mail application. I guess that this may related to the hardware/software configuration that I am using. I would like to ask you if you can confirm that I am experiencing a problem related to the hardware that I am using. I tried both the release 0.5 and the HEAD version (that I downloaded on Friday) under Win XP (freshly installed, with only Haggle running on it). I have followed the instructions in overview.html and The firewall service is off. I am using the Edimax EW-7318 ug dongles (please note that I am not using the 7317 model, even if I actually ordered it and I received the 7318 instead :) ) Finally, I would also like to let you know that in one machine, when I start the demo mail application and I log for the first time in the mail server, the debug message about the registration of the new name is not displayed. This message is actually displayed only later when I send the first message. Moreover, I often need to disable and enable the network connections when I restart Haggle in order to obtain a normal behaviour. In fact, sometimes, it happens that the "switching" between ad hoc and infrastructure modes does not start at all. Restarting the connections seems the only solution in these cases. Please find below the log of the two machines that I am using. Your help is really appreciated. Hi Salvatore. Meng How Lim, the postdoc working at Intel on GPRS, didnt have much luck with it. He did get it working, and there should be an overview of how he managed that in the root directory of the repository. At one stage he was starting the connection manually, I'm not sure if he got further, because.... The main problem he found is that it is not possible in Windows Mobile 5 to have two simultaneous IP connectivities active, and once there are connections on one, you cannot activate the ohter by binding to the local IP address of that interface and then connecting out - the connection will fail until all sockets are closed on the other connectivity. The GPRS, WiFi and USB connectivities (at least) would be affected by this. What it means is that if Haggle is not the only app running, you're screwed. Also one of the selling points of Haggle, i.e. using multiple connectivities with different bandwidths/charging models and doing this in a smart way per-task, is kind of crippled by the fact that you only get to use one connectivity at a time. I suggest that EU project partners focus on Linux phones only, until Microsoft fixes this issue. The alternative is to use GPRS and Bluetooth, but Bluetooth is a bad replacemenet for WiFi since it takes ages to inquire, it is slower, and it doesnt have the potential for free, fast internet access through access points.
