It would be nice to be able to bind hardware keys to specific keystrokes or operations, for example:

- map Volume Up/Down to switch to the next/previous key layout (equivalent to dragging the space bar)

- map Volume Up/Down to Tab and Ctrl for ConnectBot in portrait mode

- map the Camera button to toggle 4-row vs 5-row, or turning suggestions on/off.

This should of course be optional behavior, and only active while the keyboard is displayed. The original function of the keys would remain when the keyboard is hidden.

It could also be useful to be able to bind these operations to soft keys, on the keyboard.

Generalizing this issue - the current logic for gesture actions is limited due to only supporting a few actions, and bindings to simple swipe gestures and the the volume keys.

This should really be a generic mechanism, where any supported action can be bound to a hardware key, gesture, or (once the remapping from issue 13 is available) to a software key.

Summary: Support binding gestures and hardware keys to actions

For instance: having a dedicated key or key combination to switch int.language layout (instead of the space swipe) would be very welcome in itself, as quite useful basic functionality.

Having the ability to switch language using normal keys on hdw keyboard would be very welcome as well, for the same reason.

This is from the perspective of Asus Transformer Infinity owner, since for this device apparently the Hacker's keyboard looks to be ~the only usable alternative, taking into account the fact that language switch key is absent for some reason in the stock Android keyboard there...
