What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Try to use the keyboard on a 9 or 10" tablet.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Your thumbs can't reach the keys in the middle.
Please provide any additional information below.
There are a couple of possible solutions. You could provide tablet-friendly versions of some of the more popular layouts with slightly thinner keys and a horizontal gap in the middle. Alternately, you could provide a menu option to tabletofy the current layout.

I'm currently working on customizable layouts (see the linked bug), this should make it possible to support the type of layout you're looking for. Please be patient, it's a fairly complex change.

Makes sense to me. I made a tablet-friendly layout for my own use but haven't submitted it, because I saw that you were working on a new layout format.
Once the new format solidifies, I'll submit a patch.
