I would like to know how to insert emoticons in a mail or sms message.

Currently, the 5-row layout doesn't have any special emoticon support, you'd need to enter them manually using the component characters, such as ':' '-' ')', just like on a traditional PC keyboard.

Please see issue 13 for the planned future feature of supporting customizable key layouts, which should make it possible to add a custom key if desired.
