Use gestures to close the keyboard is difficult because often there are false positives keys.

Have you tried v1.30rc5 from http://code.google.com/p/hackerskeyboard/downloads/list ? I've changed the swipe threshold to make it easier to trigger. Or bind "volume down" to "close keyboard". (The volume button will still work normally while the keyboard is closed.)

Other than that, it'll unfortunately have to wait until keyboard remapping from issue 13 is available, there really isn't space on the current layouts for an extra key, especially if it's not needed for normal Android devices that have a Back key.
