Can GVF do both 3D and 2D graph visualization?

No, not in its current state. Checkout Tulip for 3D.

Initial versions of gvf (1999-2000) used Java3D and OpenGL libraries. We found that 3D navigation and view angle issues distracted from the already difficult problem of 2D graphviz without providing noticeable benefits (besides the novelty of the graphics). Java3D also required lots of memory overhead to build SceneGraph(s). Some types of interaction such as context-sensitive right-mouse menu were also prohibited by the version of Magician (OpenGL for Java) that was available at that time. When java graphics libraries sped up, we moved to those in an effort to become more platform independent.

      regards,
      scott
