The Send function is really a faith based send. You hope all the email went when you press Send. Would it be possible to add a tab for a log that allows the sender to review that the smtp email was sent successfully for each email. You would not want it too large, so perhaps a setting for log size and when it should roll off. ?

Its not quite - when you press send the program writes a complete list of recipients to disk, and then calls a batch send function which loads recipients one by one and sends to them - if sending to a recipient fails you should see that address in an error message saying that the message could not be sent to all recipients.
Course you won't see this if its being sent by a cron job, so I can see the need for an error log like you suggest. Will definitely consider this for 1.7
