hmm... Internet Explorer did the correct thing with the .ppt file: 
 brought up the dialogue asking me to save or open the file.

in Netscape, when i tried this on the .rtf file it also acted correctly.

I don't have powerpoint on my home computer, so when i return from 
vacation next week, i'll try the .ppt files from work
