I tried rfkill, didn't change my current draw at all.

I have been looking for a way to turn off and then on the wifi chip, or at
least put it in a low power mode. I too would love some resolution to this,
but it has been over a year since I started looking for it.

I believe some work needs to be done to the libertas driver. I looked at it
and I don't believe it is completed. It has the low level function to put it
to sleep, but I don't believe they are accessible from user space.

I am also very interested in knowing how to get rfkill to work on the 
Gumstix WiFi and Bluetooth adapters. I have posted questions similar to 
yours (in October 2010) and so far no response.

Hopefully someone with inside knowledge will respond...  I will be 
following this thread with interest...
