This isn't necessarily true (although in most cases it is). this may not help you, but:
My Macbook (OS X 10.4) doesn't run Psyco. For my simulations, however, the speed increase was of high interest. So I installed the DSL distro of linux in vmware, mirrored all my files over via ssh, and ran them. 40% speed increase over my native OS X runs without Psyco.
Now, is this because it simulates a 32-bit processor (I'm not even sure if this is true) or because psyco works best with linux as opposed to OS X?
