If it's not too old, you can use the command:
strings -20 u-boot.bin | grep U-Boot
On my buildoot, this is currently reporting:
598 >strings -20 u-boot.bin | grep U-Boot
\U-Boot 1.2.0 (Nov 18 2007 - 10:07:32) - PXA270@... MHz - 1564
** Invalid partition type "%.32s" (expect "U-Boot")
so I can tell that it was built from rev 1564, and that its for a 400
