I missed that. Sorry my email was incorrect and I did have AF1 in my code and not AF3 as indicated in the original post. Thanks to you both I now have a fully working serial port and my software has come on leaps and bounds. For interest I'm using a simple RS232 graphic VFD display which works a treat now.
