Hi Greg, > i think it would almost be easier if instead of audio jacks, we were > provided with the tip, ring and sleeve breakouts for mounting our own > jacks. Since we're talking about the audiostix, I figured I'd throw out a couple of complaints too (in case Gordon is listening :) I noticed that the breakouts for the UCB1400 GPIOs are actually underneath part of the audio jacks, which makes it more difficult to solder to (it's bad enough with the close spacing, but having to solder from the same side as the wire makes it even more difficult. Using through hole parts would obviously make these connectors MUCH more rigid. I'd be curious to find out if your audiostix is one of the RoHS compliant ones, and if the weaker solder is due to it using lead free solder. I know that the lead-free solders have a higher melting temperature and maybe the solder wasn't heated up properly, which resulted in a weaker joint. I've been following the whole RoHS thing on another list (GeckoDrive) and its amazing how the beaurocrats can really mess stuff up. I suspect we're going to start seeing alot of failures in the field (on many devices - not just the gumstix) due to using unleaded solder. -- Dave Hylands Vancouver, BC, Canada http://www.DaveHylands.com/ |
