It's also important to note that even if you erase enough flash to put your new root fs in so that u-boot won't complain that you're writing to non-blank flash, if there are unerased sectors "high" in flash, then you'll have problems in linux, where the JFFS2 filesystem will get confused when it sees that there's stuff in those high sectors, which don't correspond to what the root_fs thinks is there. Anyways, just always erase all of flash before writing a new root_fs in u-boot: GUM> protect on 1:0-1 && erase all or if you have one of the latest u-boots from buildroot which include the "jerase" command: GUM> protect on 1:0-1 && jerase all The latter command will cut down your first-boot time substantially, since JFFS2 won't have to scan all of flash and put its little sector header in each flash sector.
