I had the same problem and solved it using busybox.
The newer versions of busybox have a basic 'sendmail' built in. As I am using an old buildroot, I had to download and make busybox 1.10.1. Anyway, make menu config in busybox should allow you to build sendmail as part of busybox.
I hope this helps.

I am trying to use SMTP to e-mail off some data that my gumstix is
collecting. I have searched through the messages here and have not found an
easy way to install some sort of smtp mailer onto the gumstix. I don't need
sendmail or anything that complicated. I can telnet into my mail server and
send a message, but have not found a way of scripting that, since telnet
won't really allow scripting. Anyone have any suggestions, I was surprised
to see that not very many people are trying to e-mail data off the gumstix.
I am also open to other methods... At the moment the best I can think of is
SCP'ing my data off, and then running a script on the server the gumstix
sends the data to, to actually mail the data to me using e-mail. Receiving
the data via e-mail is important. Just SCP'ing the data off doesn't work.
