Is it possible to compile C programs that use i2c-io.h and i2c-io.c to
communicate with my RoboStix using OE, or do I need to stick with buildroot

Yes, that is possible.
I am using
"linux.CFLAGS += -I../../../../i2c-1.0-r2"
to get to the build-directory for the I2C-code
(I tried to use environment-varibles to get the workdir but
that did not work. A cleaner solution like a dependency on
the i2c-package would be very nice.)
