Hi all, I am about to start playing with the sw builds on my verdex. Previously a colleague of mine was doing all the sw efforts and I was just working on integrating and HW interfacing. Since our old build is older (like 4-5 months), I was thinking of upgrading. So I had a few questions; 1). how do you tell what version is running on the gumstix (it was factory installed) 2). I have a verdex BT processor and have also purchased a wifi board. Can you use both BT and WiFi at the same time, or is there some UART conflicts in doing so? 3). which buildroot version works best for using both WiFi and BT? thanks 'mark Mark Young wrote: > Mark, > > The NAP part should be fine; I just left that out of my email to focus > on the serial port part. Not sure about the voltage. I'm running mine at 5v and they are working consistently. Could it be heat? I would think you'd be generating excess heat at 7v. Maybe someone else on the board has experience with this. ----- Original Message ---- From: Mark Ahlenius <m_a...@co...> To: General mailing list for gumstix users. <gum...@li...> Sent: Friday, December 7, 2007 8:21:03 PM Subject: Re: [Gumstix-users] Bluetooth services problem- help please I just had it working again - and then the next time I booted it did not include the rfcomm processes and the pand one. But I think I might have figured this out. I could be way off on this, but it might be a voltage supply problem in my circuitry. I was using a battery pack before with a 5 volt regulator chip. Some of my other circuitry needs 5 v and 6-7 volts as well. So I was using a power supply for the time being. My regulator was heating up a bit so I lowered my input voltage to 7.0v dc. I rebooted after changing the voltage and there was no rfcomm processes nor pand. So I raised the voltage and wala, its working again. Maybe the BT circuitry on the Verdex BT is very sensitive to a minimum level? Mark, What version of buildroot are you running? You can check it by running "# more /etc/gumstix-release". I recommend that you use 1566. It should work for RFCOMM without any configuration modifications. - Mark ----- Original Message ---- From: Mark Ahlenius <m_a...@co...> To: General mailing list for gumstix users. <gum...@li...> Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2007 9:17:21 PM Subject: Re: [Gumstix-users] Bluetooth services problem- help please Hi, I am once again having some BT problems. I thought this was voltage related, but it may not be. When I boot up, I can see my gumstix from my PC but cannot connect to it using the a BT serial port device (this worked in the past). When I run the "sdptool browse local" command which Mark Young suggested below, I do not get a "RFCOMM" in the Protocol Descriptor List - BUT I do see several RFCOMM processes when I do a "ps" Should I see this descriptor running in a sdptool output? If its not running, what could be the cause? thanks 'mark Mark Young wrote: > Try "sdptool browse local" from your gumstix prompt and see if your > rfcomm service is running. OK, a colleague built the application for me. If we upgrade to a new buildroot, do we need to update our apps as well? I have a demo this week and it just started acting flaky... thx 'mark Mark Young wrote: > Mark, > > What version of buildroot are you running? Hi Mark and all, I get that just fine on mine, but I get a bit more beyond what you pasted; mine inlcudes the network access point stuff. Should this be there as well? I never get to the point where it asks me for a passkey. Is this sw fairly stable? I just had it working again - and then the next time I booted it did not include the rfcomm processes and the pand one. Hi, I am once again having some BT problems. Mark > Should I see this descriptor running in a sdptool output? > > If its not running, what could be the cause? make sure hcid is running. the command 'sdptool add SP' is what tells hcid to advertise the serial service. One or the other of these steps is not working out at startup. in the latest buildroot, the actual service gets connected to getty by a single background 'rfcomm' app. -- Brad |

There should be no problem adding it again. fwiw, the sdptool command (or a more verbose command with the explicit channel 1) should already be in your startup files, but maybe for some reason there's a race now and it fails. I wish I could say I learned this stuff from our excellent bluez docs, but I probably came across it first in the bluetooth spec when working on bt audio. -- Brad |

=20 Okay, I just got my Verdex board a few weeks ago. I got bluetooth working by putting the Echo statements in the S30bluetooth file. Bluetooth started working and I was able to see the Gumstix on my Treo. I wasn't, however, able to get my Treo terminal to connect so that I could get a remote login prompt. I believe I had to change the HCIMAXATTACH (or something like that) baud rate down from ~900K down to like ~100K. After reboot I was able to pull up the terminal over bluetooth on my Treo. I celebrated briefly, rebooted the system, and showed one of my friends. Again, it worked. I rebooted the system again, and then I started getting these gobbling errors. I just updated my gumstix to the most current buildroot (since there were some changes that were supposed to fix the bluetooth problems), and I still get the gobbling message. I haven't been able to get anywhere with this. Last night I noticed an older post where someone mentioned that Craig had some problems with dropping the max baud rate and it screwing up the bluetooth hardware. I couldn't find any further information. I'm enclosing the system output that I get. Does anyone have a solution, is the bluetooth module bad, should I RMA? Any assistance would be appreciated. Hi, I just noticed that in the /etc/init.d/S30Bluetooth startup script file, it has the following line, which is slightly different than your recommendation: /usr/bin/sdptool add --channel=1 SP > /dev/null 2>&1 Does this look right? thanks 'mark Brad Midgley wrote: > Mark > > >> But if I do the command you gave me: >> >> # sdptool add SP >> Serial Port service registered >> # >> >> And it connects!! wow. I was wondering if anyone knew what would need modified in order to rotate the output to the LCD? Right now the LCD is being used horizontally, and I'd like to make the output vertical. Hi Thomas, It depends on what environment in which you want the display rotated. If you are wanting the console to be rotated then you'll have to add in framebuffer console support and fb console rotation in your kernel config. IIRC that is available in the graphics driver section. You may also have to add in virtual terminal support under character devices in your kernel config to make that option available. Once you do that you'll need to modify your bootargs to include "fbcon=rotate:1" without the quotes. For more info on that check out fbcon.txt in the kernel Documentation dir. That procedure only works for the framebuffer console. If you are using Xfbdev as your X server you can pass it your desired rotation on the command line. I'm sure there are similar options for directfb and qtopia. Chris On 12/12/07, Thomas K. I've tried rotating the console via the bootarg, and it locks up during = bootup (but it does properly rotate the gumstix image). I can rotate the console, however, using this command from the prompt: echo 1 >/sys/class/graphics/fbcon/rotate The makefile settings all have the items you suggested selected by = default. Something else going on? Perhaps my bootargs are lacking = something? I'd like to have it rotate on bootup, but I guess I'm okay = with adding the above echo statement to one of the init scripts. PBA 313 08/1ES4 I think it's bad. I've tried contacting Gumstix sales and got no response, so I'll probably just dispute it on my card...unless you have some solution. Sincerely, Thomas K. I can't speak for gumstix or what you should do next, but I know Steve is working on this issue (eg late last night). There seems to be something different about the 1ES4 that doesn't allow adapter init to work and it seems to be the last group of adapters that is still out in the cold. If anyone with a 1ES4 has working bluetooth, you should speak up to help zero in on the problem. -- Brad |

Thomas, On the board I have with a 1ES4, I was able to get bluetooth going again by commenting out i2c-pxa in /etc/modutils/i2c-pxa and running update-modules Brad On Dec 17, 2007 6:49 AM, Thomas K. Bailey <tkb...@ba...> wrote: > PBA 313 08/1ES4 -- Brad |

For some reason the 1ES4 modules do not like to have their i2c pins wiggle during startup (how's that for a technical description :-) Infineon support folks are out of the office till January 2, so I can't talk to them about a workaround till then. Rest assured it's at the top of my list.
