You can put a new root file system on the CF card and pivot_root to it.
Think of the jffs2 flash version as your initrd.
u-boot can be made to access a CF card, but that only seems necessary
if your kernel and initrd won't fit in the flash on the gumstix.
I suppose a pcmcia boot disk would be slick :)
The u-boot cmd_pcmcia.c is derived from the kernel's m8xx_pcmcia.c
the support for pxa processors needs code from the kernel's
gumstix driver (pxa2xx_gumstix.c) and some configuration in
u-boot's include/configs/gumstix.h to get u-boot talking to the CF.
