Hi list, I am interested in providing analog sensor data to a gumstix connex. The robostix is not currently an option, so I am looking for ways to interface pic or basic stamp microprocessors with my gumstix. The i2c bus comes up regularly as a way to do this, but I am finding it difficult to locate resources for connecting the gumstix and a pic (or other) microprocessor. Can anyone recommend any good resources for understanding i2c, how I might connect the gumstix connex to a pic or basic stamp, and perhaps wiring or programming demos? I appreciate the help and direction. Best Christopher |

Hiya Christopher, I had a similar issue. There are a number of options you have: - Bluetooth - Serial - Ethernet I have used all three and Ethernet is the simplest. You can interface a PIC to an Ethernet interface in a number of ways. The simplest is using a Lantronix XPort. Microchip (the company that makes PIC micros) makes an Ethernet interface chip that sells for ~US$8.50 from Digikey. I just ordered a few to play with. I have a sensor and door controller I build using the XPort and a PIC16F88. It uses a Gumstix for control and storing of sensor data. You can use an Ethernet network for a number of sensor or control applications this way. I understand where to look for i2c c-code, how to compile apps etc, =20 but I am still trying to figure out where to find information on how =20 to actually hook these i2c devices up to the gumstix. I have a question about a compiler for buildroot On the Gumstix forum it says: The g++ C++ compiler is now buildable using the buildroot. It is however disabled by default. To enable C++ support in the buildroot, edit the top-level Makefile and change the definition of INSTALL_LIBSTDCPP. Then re-build using make and you'll have a arm-linux-g++ created alongside arm-linux-gcc Could anyone please help me out here on doing this correctly since the command arm-linux-gcc doesn't work |

If you look at this page: http://gumstix.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=3DJTAG you'll see a photo of the hirose connector with the pin numbers identified. SDA is pin 19, and SCL is pin 20. Pin 21 is the hole just below the T in TDO. Pin 20 is the via (round hole) just below the O in TDO, and pin 19 is below the D. 30 gauge wire wrap wire will fit nicely in the via holes. Try not to apply too much heat for too long when soldering as these vias are pretty small and it's relatively easy to lift the pads. I use a temperature controlled soldering iron set to 630F-650F. The Vcc is +3.3v. You'll need a pullup resistor (anything in the 4.7k to 10k range should be fine) on each of the SDA and SCL lines going to 3.3v. You'll need to connect SDA, SCL, and Gnd to the PIC. There are some occurences of arm-linux-gcc: command not found that are normal during kernel configuration. Was the arm-linux-gcc command not found seen as part of the build? Or was it from typing it on the command line?
