This stinks- I had a working rootfs on my gumstix and wanted to re-flash with a newer build, now things are not behaving well at all. Has anyone seen behavior like the following?: Often when it boots it stops on the "Freeing init memory (56K)" message and sits there forever (I have tried leaving it for almost an hour and no luck). If I reboot it it seems to come up. I tried appending debug_user=3D0x1f to bootargs in u-boot as Craig suggested but it doesn't display any extra info (is the address wrong or something?) The other problem is that I have a tweener and an etherstix, which are mutually exclusive. I boot with the tweener and it seems to work most of the time. I connect the etherstix and it boots, the network lights come on, I can ping it, and if I nmap it, I get PORT STATE SERVICE 13/tcp open daytime 22/tcp open ssh 37/tcp open time 80/tcp open http 113/tcp open auth However, if I attempt to connect I get ssh: connect to host (ipaddress) port 22: Connection refused. Anyone have any ideas? Did something change in the default buildroot in the last month or so to change the default dropbear settings? -Kevin |

Sounds good- I am loading an old jffs image that I knew worked to make sure that still works, then I will try the current build to see what the debug output shows. Greetings, Did you solve your boot-related problems? Since transferring my own jffs image, I have the same problem (current configuration is a basix 400xm and waysmall STUART). I've tried disconnecting the usb cable prior to booting, as suggested elsewhere, but to no avail. Hi Craig (and the rest of you), Sorry for taking so long before replying, I postponed answering your mail & then totally forgot about it. Anyhow, I've setup a working rootfs now, but I can reinstall a 'vanilla' build of rev 989 & post the results here, if it's still requested? I believe Markus (who posted the uClibc.config patch) sent the debug output to the list last weekend, but I'm not sure whether it got through or not (seems a lot of emails were lost in /dev/null or someplace alike). Cheers, Adrian On 5/12/06, Craig Hughes <cr...@gu...> wrote: > Adrian, > > does user_debug=3D0x1f added to the bootargs show you anything? > > C > > On May 12, 2006, at 6:38 AM, Adrian Papari wrote: > > > Greetings, > > > > Did you solve your boot-related problems? Sorry for responding (well, I'd rather people regarded this as appending) to my own email, but: I re-compiled the buildroot, again, this time with the default configuration (make defconfig && make) - but the boot process still stops upon the "freeing init memory" message. The boot arguments are: bootargs console=3DttyS0,115200n8 root=3D1f01 rootfstype=3Djffs2 as suggested in the wiki (else I'm stuck with a kernel panic). Hi Adrian! I have one solution of the "Freeing init memory" problem. It seems to be uClibc that causes this, by using the attached little patch the problem should go away. You probably need to rebuild the while toolchain. I have not done any extensive search to find the actual cause of this problem. This problem came with revision 985 of the buildroot tree. The /target/device/Gumstix/basix-connex/uClibc.config was changed. Markus Söderholm Adrian Papari wrote: > Greetings, > > Did you solve your boot-related problems? Yes, if you didn't rebuild your toolchain after updating to r985, =20 then you will need to do so: cd /path/to/buildroot;rm -rf build_arm_nofpu toolchain_build_arm_nofpu make C On May 15, 2006, at 1:18 AM, Markus S=F6derholm wrote: > Hi Adrian! > > I have one solution of the "Freeing init memory" problem. > It seems to be uClibc that causes this, by using the attached little > patch the problem should go away. Hi, Actually, I did a clean check out of rev 989, just to be on the safe side, and the problem persisted - that is, until I applied the patch. So I don't think the issue arises from updating to a more recent revision. Actually i have checked out the whole r989 revision and then tried to build from scratch with "make defconfig && make". Doing this the gumstix hangs on "Freeing init memmory (56K)". But when applying the patch i get the gumstix up and running again. I suspect that it is only the configure options UCLIBC_SECURITY=y PROPOLICE_BLOCK_SEGV=y that makes things going again. Correct me if i'm wrong this does not solve the real issue it just blocks the errors that occurs.
