Well I have worked myself into a corner and now my gumstix will not load
the kernel properly. Here is what I did and what I have:
I have a know good root_fs_arm image on my mmc card.
I built a root_fs_arm image with the graphics secions of the kernel
What I did:
Following the wiki on the display I build my kernel and changed the
envoronment according to the wiki
GUM> setenv bootargs console=3DttyS0,115200n8 root=3D1f02 rootfstype=3Djf=
display numbers were changed to math my display resolution.
What happend is the kernel booted and said done, then I got all garbage o=
Next: I put the envvars back to:
bootcmd=3Dfsload a2000000 boot/uImage;bootm a2000000
bootargs=3Dconsole=3DttyS0, 115200n8 root=3D1f02 rootfstype=3Djffs2 reboo=
Environment size: 380/4092 bytes
and loaded my known good kernel. But the I got the same result, the
kernel loaded and said done then all garbage. I would be thankfull for
any ideas or suggestions?

Should be no space after "ttyS0," but that's not the problem in the
first instance. The root_fs you built is probably bad.
