The pxa255 has 4 serial ports built in. Whether they're available for
use or not depends on your exact system configuration.
In theory you could add a bunch of external serial ports, but nobody
that I know of makes any such addon cards for the gumstix.

I'm working with the STR711 (ARM7TMDI) specifically because it has four
UARTs (and also USB device). I will eventually have a driver that will
allow multiplexing a single gumstix UART to multiple UARTs on the ARM7.
Another way to add more UARTs is using an SPI UART like MAX3100, these
are expensive but they have hardware flow control and include crystal
oscillator and baud rate generator (300-230k baud).
