Final cost should be competitive with active matrix LCD. Right now our only commercial products are greyscale, but we have done color and expect to commercialize that next year (with a lead customer). I personally would like to sell our next color samples as accessories to the developer's kit, since you can use all the same electronics to drive them. -Holly Dan Cherill wrote: >>hmm.. a bit out of my price range. :) >> >> >no kidding. > >any idea what the final cost of a display would be, or what sizes will be available. >greyscale only? > >-----Original Message----- >From: gum...@li... >[mailto:gum...@li...]On Behalf Of >N.E.Whiteford >Sent: Tuesday, September 27, 2005 6:50 PM >To: gum...@li... >Subject: Re: [Gumstix-users] E Ink demo kits > > >hmm.. a bit out of my price range. :) > >On Tue, 27 Sep 2005, Holly Gates wrote: > > > >>Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know that the press release for our >>active matrix demo kit went out today. Are the driver electronics in the demo kit the same as shown in http://www.eink.com/pdf/Philips_E_Ink_Electronic_Paper_Datasheet_May04.pdf (Philips Apollo) or a different one? I think in your paper about the bigger display you also described a way to use the gumstix directly to drive the display? Ralph |

Do you know of any plans for a dev kit for smaller displays such a ones used on Epsons passive RFID tag display? Or of a dev kit for the character and segmented displays? Or as you suggested might be the case with colour display are these more likely to be accessories to this initial dev kit. Just desperate to get my hands on this tech but that 6"screen is a bit large for my plans : ) Cheers, Dan Holly Gates wrote: >Final cost should be competitive with active matrix LCD. Well, they look pretty good and in bright light are better than color LCD. But they are reflective and built using a color filter, so lots of light is getting destroyed on its trip in and out of the display. Plus you have to build 3-4 times as many pixels (and the drivers that go with them) into the display, and put a micron-aligned filter on top, which increases cost or decreases resolution significantly. In my opinion its not a clear win for most products. But these days people seem to want color, even when it doesn't add much real functionality. Could be good for some products anyway. Besides, everyone wants to hear that you have color displays on the way, even if they wouldn't make sense for the product they are currently trying to build. -Holly N.E.Whiteford wrote: >Blimey, Colour eink displays should be amazing I look forward to it. > >On Wed, 28 Sep 2005, Holly Gates wrote: > > > >>Final cost should be competitive with active matrix LCD. yes that's true, colour doesn't often add much above looking nice. I'd really like to be able to buy a PDA with a black and white display for the increased battery life it'd give, but it's almost impossible at the moment. nav On Wed, 28 Sep 2005, Holly Gates wrote: > Well, they look pretty good and in bright light are better than color > LCD. The electronics are similar in function to the Apollo board in the link, but similar in form to the set described in the paper. In the paper, the LCD controller of the gumstix is used to drive the display via an intermediate controller called Metronome. In the dev kit, the same hardware lines are used to connect between the gumstix and the controller, but in GPIO mode instead of LCD mode. I've designed a smaller version of the Apollo controller to go in the kit. Somone else pointed out that the Librie is also using the Apollo controller, which is true. -Holly Ralph Metzler wrote: >Holly Gates writes: > > Final cost should be competitive with active matrix LCD. The trouble is that the 6" screen is the only one which has made it all the way to standard product status and which we have to rights to sell to anyone. We have done all sorts of other sizes, but only in the context of an engineering trial or demo. We've done an engineering sample of a 10" A5 sized display, 1280x900, but if you think the dev kit is expensive, you should see how much we charge for those! Lets see, a TFT mask set and all the engineering amortized across less than 100 parts... Well anyway they are expensive but semi-available. A while ago we did a fair number of 3" QVGA screens, but while the company we did them with agreed to let us show them at tradeshows and the like, we can't sell them in small quantity. I think we may start offering a character and segment dev kit, but its still under discussion. I'm on the hook to design the electronics for such a kit, but so far the marketing and applications engineering people can't decide what should be in it or what it should do. A kit like that would probably have a serial interface or something, so it would be relatively easier to hook up to a gumstix than an active matrix panel is. -Holly Daniel Blackburn wrote: > Do you know of any plans for a dev kit for smaller displays such a > ones used on Epsons passive RFID tag display? I didn't say I thought the $3000 was expensive. But you're right about the custom sizes being well out of my price range : ) I'm just ecstatic that I can get hold of this tech so quickly. I thought it was going to be a lot longer before it became publicly available. As for the character/segment kit, I really hope that happens soon. A serial interface would be great as that opens up the potential of using things much smaller and cheaper than the Gumstix (sorry). As this is going a bit off topic for a Gumstix list (sorry again) is there a public E ink list? Or will there just be a private list accessible to buyers of the Dev Kit? Holly, Have you tried the Toshiba poly-silicone TFT displays? http://www.tridentdisplays.co.uk/component_displays/colour_modules/industrial_tft_panel/4_industrial_tft.html These are 200 pixels per inch, and are advertised as being close to paper or photos in appearance. I have wanted to try these but haven't gotten around to it yet. I think 4" VGA at 202ppi would be a nice form factor. -- Doug Holly Gates wrote: >The trouble is that the 6" screen is the only one which has made it all >the way to standard product status and which we have to rights to sell >to anyone. Doug, A few months back I looked into that LCD, but I was unable to find a supplier for small quantities. Have you been more successful than I? That LCD would be ideal for the project I am attempting to make time for. Eric, Trident Displays quoted me small quantities, but that was quite some time ago. They are in the UK, and I was unable to find a north american distributor. I was surprised at the single qty price, it was quite reasonable. -- Doug Eric Heinemann wrote: >Doug, > >A few months back I looked into that LCD, but I was unable to find a supplier for small >quantities.
