I received an Overo a couple of days ago. No problem at all getting it set up and running using a DVI monitor and external mouse and keyboard. However I have experienced two problems: 1) The WiFi is simply not reliable. It will connect no problem. However it is impossible to get a very high data rate through it (for example RDP sessions are pretty unresponsive). That might be tolerable, however the bigger problem is that it continuously drops connections and then reconnects. It will even do this when I am not using it (don't even have a browser or any other kind of network connection open or in use (netstat -a shows no active connections). It would appear the unreliability of the WiFi is a known problem. The gear I am connecting to has been rock solid, and in continuous use for years: definitely not the source of the problem. 2) Output to the monitor, at multiple resolution settings (1024x768MR-16@60,1280x720MR-16@60,1280x800MR-16@60) is prone to strange bitmap problems. What happens is that large areas of windows will be filled with a repeating, random unintelligible bitmap. Its sort of usable, but you would not want to design any product for it. The problem will randomly go away, but it comes back continuously. I have tried other monitors and different cables (all of which are known to work) to no avail. I am thinking that this unit (either the COM or the Expansion board, or both) is bad, but was told to check here for ideas first. From searching the mailing list, it would actually appear that the Wifi functionality is known to be unreliable. Indeed using an ethernet dongle shows that the COM is capable of handling network traffic to at least a moderate level. I have seen no mentions from others about HDMI(DVI) problems such as this. I am running the as shipped software, which seems to work fine, these problems notwithstanding. |

For the DVI problem you might want to try a more updated prebuilt image done on a sd card. I think there were a few images a while back that had some monitor issues like you said if I remember right. As far as wifi your on the money its not reliable and no solid solution yet that I have come across, I run the exact setup you do. Hope this helps some On Thu, Sep 2, 2010 at 12:37 PM, Stan Zitello <zm...@be...> wrote: > I received an Overo a couple of days ago. I installed the *desktop-image* build from 0827 and the DVI problems are gone. Also, the wifi performance is much better. Indeed, I can now sustain an RDP (5) session at 1200x740 with "lan" features turned on using the wifi. It is not perfect, but it is usable. I did, however, find some problems with this build. First, it is missing libstdc++6 (easy to add with opkg). Also, I can not get sound to work. mplayer says that /dev/dsp is busy, however I have no idea why that would be. It works fine with the original code shipped with the COM. If anyone knows what might be causing this problem I would like to know. I may end up using an Ubuntu based build in the end. I found a prebuilt image and have it dual booting (with the 0827 image) on my single 8GB SDHC card with 4 partitions. The wireless is a problem with that right now, not because of performance, but because it is not loading the firmware. --- On Thu, 9/2/10, J. L. <vwy...@gm...> wrote: From: J. Hi, I am also trying to make my overo fire give images on a tv. I am very new to gumstix, do you think you could send me some instructions on how to make gumstix output an image. I just pulled gumstix from the box followed the "getting started steps" on gumstix.com, but cannot get any image on a tv or a computer screen. Thank very much Luis Ayala |
