Hi again, I RMA'd my LCD screen and the replacement arrived today. It's still not working, so I must be doing something wrong, but I'm out of ideas. Can anyone who has the LCD working please give me some advice? 1. When is the display supposed to come on? As soon as power is applied to the system? Or does it have to be initialized by the OS first? 2. This picture shows how I have the screen oriented: http://stevenf.com/gfx/gumlcd1-20080813-203244.jpg Is this correct? Here's a close-up without the top two boards: http://stevenf.com/gfx/gumlcd2-20080813-203808.jpg As you can tell by the power LEDs, the system is up and running, and I have a login prompt at the console. Here are the last few lines of the boot: tsc2003 i2c touch screen controller tsc2003_i2c_detect: probing address 0x48 input: tsc2003 as /class/input/input0 tsc2003 - registering input device tsc2003_i2c_detect: device address 0x48 attached. Is there any sort of film I'm supposed to remove from the ribbon cable contacts? I don't see anything. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Steven |

Steven, Your setup appears to be identical to the setup that I have been using for a week. Here is "what I see, in order of seeing it: 1) A few seconds after booting, the top half of the screen shows a copy of the Gumstix logo (where "bottom" is where the ribbon cables attach to the LCD); 2) After the kernel finishes booting, approximately the first action taken by the inittap script is to clear the LCD and display the words "system booting, please wait..." (paraphrased, it has been running continuously for days) 3) Toward the end of inittab script execution, the LCD presents a classical Linux/UNIX login request, displaying system version information, how to customize it (this is all in the "message of the day"), and asking for a username. A few days after first starting up, I tried attaching a USB keyboard and the system automatically associates the keyboard with the LCD (which just like a classical PC, the userspace device that includes both keyboard and display can be accessed at /dev/tty1). Our setup also works well with the touchscreen library utilities, ts_calibrate, ts_test, et cetera. Your TSC2003 output looks very similar to ours too (This is from "dmesg" output, so it's not exactly identical in formatting): <6>tsc2003 i2c touch screen controller <6>tsc2003_i2c_detect: probing address 0x48 <6>input: tsc2003 as /class/input/input2 <6>tsc2003 - registering input device <6>tsc2003_i2c_detect: device address 0x48 attached. <6>I2C: i2c-0: PXA I2C adapter <6>tsc2003 i2c touch screen controller <6>tsc2003_i2c_detect: probing address 0x48 <4>i2c: error: timeout <4>i2c: msg_num: 1 msg_idx: 0 msg_ptr: 1 <4>i2c: ICR: 000017ee ISR: 00000005 <4>i2c: log: [00000045:000017e8] [00000085:000017ee] <6>I2C: i2c-1: PXA I2C adapter <6>i2c /dev entries driver There is one additional hint that may help you. I see in the second image that the little latch for the LCD connection *may* not be fully pressed in. I had the help of someone who taught me that the little black latch needs to be pulled away from the power supply connector to insert the ribbon cable properly, and then needs to be fully reseated back toward the power supply connector to make good contact. After learning that, my LCD worked well. (The touch screen is a bit wonky, showing inconsistency of 1-2 mm in the X direction for touches near the left side of the display. This is detectable using the ts_test program.) Finally, I have tested powering the three-board setup either with the Console-VX or the NetMicroSD (with no wifi attached). I never get ANYTHING on-screen. I don't even see a backlight come on. It looks no different than when it's powered down, all the way to a fully booted system. This is my 2nd screen. The 1st one behaved the same way. It seems unlikely that two in a row are defective. Maybe my ConsoleVX board is bad? The serial ports work, but maybe something is wrong with the LCD connector? > There is one additional hint that may help you. I unlatch the black part, slide the ribbon between the black & white sections, then latch the black part back down until it's all the way down. No part of the gold pins is exposed -- it's fully within the connector. Orientation is as shown before: http://stevenf.com/gfx/gumlcd1-20080813-203244.jpg I don't know what to do now. RMA the console board? Steven |

I second what Len Samuelson said about the connection. When we first hooked ours up it seemed like it was inserted correctly but after closing the latch the connector could easily be pulled out. If you have it connected correctly, this will not be possible. I recommend looking at this tutorial: http://hbmobile.pronoiac.org/index.php/HOWTO_Get_a_ConsoleLCD-VX_System_Working Hope this helps! Best of luck. ~Jamey On Thursday 14 August 2008 15:04, Steven Frank wrote: > On Aug 14, 2008, at 5:11 AM, Leonard Samuelson wrote: > > Here is "what I see, in order of seeing it: > > > > 1) A few seconds after booting, the top half of the screen shows a > > copy > > of the Gumstix logo (where "bottom" is where the ribbon cables > > attach to > > the LCD); > > So, right off the bat, something's not right with my setup. I took a couple macro pictures with a better camera so you can all check my work. http://stevenf.com/gfx/gumlcd3-20080816-123818.jpg http://stevenf.com/gfx/gumlcd4-20080816-123925.jpg I think, as you said, it's most likely that the console board is the culprit at this point. Steven |

I just tried reflashing the kernel and rootfs for the heck of it, but it didn't make any difference. I'm using the X11 jffs2 image from the web site that's about 15 MB unarchived. Still booting all the way to a login: prompt on the console serial port without a peep from the LCD. Not even so much as a backlight or any indication that it has power at all. I've done everything shown on that wiki page to the letter. Ten times over, with two different LCD panels. I'm so bummed about this. I bought this kit a month ago and still have yet to get anything on-screen. :-/ Gumstix folks: would you be willing to RMA the console board too, to see if that's the weak link, rather than the panel? Or would it be easier if I just sent the whole kit back so you can troubleshoot which piece is defective? Thanks for listening, Steven |

Steve, Try measuring the voltage on U11 pin2 of the ConsoleVX. It's the same Reference designator on both the LCD18 and LCD18 versions. This is the output that drives backlight. U11 may be bad. If I had to guess I'd say the console board is fried. You should have backlight on the lcd as soon as you apply power, regardless of how the rest of the lcd is functioning. Since you're not getting that, I'd say the board is the culprit. I'm sure if you email Don he can get you an RMA.
