Hi bhaskar, I hadn't previously changed the kernel configuration from the default, but now I have: In .../gumstix-buildroot/sources/linux.config, I added "CONFIG_VT=3Dy" (and removed its comment place holder), then checked out a fresh kernel source and did a build. While building the kernel, the system placed me into a small version of "make config", asking me about support for various input devices, etc. I answered no to all of these, built my kernel, and tried it out... Now trying to start the server I'm given a different error: # /usr/X11R6/bin/Xfbdev Error opening /dev/fb0 : No such device or address Fatal server error: no screens found # # ls -l /dev/fb0 crw-r----- 1 root tty 29, 0 Oct 20 2005 /dev/fb0 # Did I perhaps miss some other important item in my kernel config, or perhaps I need to load a module first? Next, I tried the instructions shown at http://www.gumstix.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=3DDisplay&highlight=3D= /d ev/fb (again, starting from a fresh linux source tree). This kernel wouldn't boot until I modified the bootargs as it shows, but once booting, I was back to the /dev/tty0 problem. I checked the .config file and was surprised to see CONFIG_VT no longer set. I set it, went through things again, and had errors compiling. -----Original Message----- From: gum...@li... Ok, today I've reset to a fresh kernel source tree... * I've configured the kernel according to the Display wiki page. * I've manually added CONFIG_VT=3Dy * I've done the make clean to insure everything gets rebuilt. * I tried make (from the top buildroot level), and encountered kernel build errors which actually suggested I "make oldconfig". At this point the build of the kernel didn't dynamically ask me to specify any configuration values. * I entered the kernel tree and performed a "make oldconfig" (including commandline settings for TARGET_CROSS and CROSS_COMPILE), and was dynamically asked about various config settings; I answered no to all of them. * Back in the top of buildroot, I performed a make, which ran until a succesful completion. * I placed this new kernel on my gumstix and rebooted, which resulted in a kernel panic. At this point I'm not too concerned because I haven't modified the boot command args yet, though since I didn't expect the FB to be put into use until I manually started X I'm not quite sure I understand the problem here. * I modified bootargs to include "video=3Dpxafb:mode:800x600-16,active" which allows me to boot properly Now, trying to start X manually looks like this: # cat startx #!/bin/sh killall Xfbdev sleep 1 export DISPLAY=3D":0" /usr/X11R6/bin/Xfbdev -ac & sleep 4 /usr/X11R6/bin/matchbox & sleep 1 /usr/X11R6/bin/minisys & /usr/X11R6/bin/minitime & /usr/X11R6/bin/rxvt & # export DISPLAY=3D":0" # /usr/X11R6/bin/Xfbdev -ac PXA: invalid hsync_len 0 PXA: invalid left_margin 0 PXA: invalid right_margin 0 PXA: invalid vsync_len 0 Touch screen not found. : No such file or directory # Xfbdev is terminating on its own because it can't find a touch screen. I've verified in my kernel .config that CONFIG_INPUT_TOUCHSCREEN is definitely not set. I've definitely made some progress with your help, but I'm at a loss for where else to look/change. Continued thanks for any suggestions you can provide. Hi Mark, Okay for the touchscreen problem you can make a softlink called /dev/ts and link it to /dev/null. the touchscreen settings will have to be changed in the tinyx source directory not in the kernel. for the hsync_len errors you will have to set these parameters to some value at the uboot options (see the display wiki) or use pxaregs to set registers manually. these errors will not stop the xserver from starting up, might mess up the lcd display though. bhaskar. Hey bhaskar, The symbolic link of /dev/ts to /dev/null did the trick (along with the bootargs), allowing Xfbdev to start, and the hsync_len etc. errors weren't present. There is a different X error though... A warning from the server's perspective: it can't init font paths (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ misc, 75dpi, 100dpi). This becomes a real error with rxvt - not a showstopper since I don't need a terminal but my app will still need fonts ;). I presume I could just copy the font directories from my Fedora Core 4 system, but just these three directories results in a 15meg tar image if I don't prune out the uninteresting fonts. Is there a particular item I should add to my Gumstix Makefile to retrieve a minimal font set, or am I on my own to pick out what I think I might need? -----Original Message----- From: gum...@li... Just what I was looking for! When I switched back to my 2.6.11 buildroot, I started getting the "no touchscreen" message, and I couldn't remember what the magic bullet was! I tried diffing everything, thinking there was something in tinyx's config/cf that I'd played with, etc. Forgot that I'd done the ln -s /dev/nul /dev/ts as suggested by Bhaskar. So, if i make a soft link in the buildroot/root/dev/ts to /buildroot/root/dev/null will it persist when I flash the gumstix next time? If so, I'll add that to my version of the tinyx Makefile to avoid forgetting that step again. A mind is a terrible thing to loose, Dave Thomas |

You won't want to have the softlink be to the absolute path / buildroot/root/dev/null or the abs. path will get migrated over to the gumstix, where there is no /buildroot. Instead, do cd /buildroot/root/dev ln -s null ts That way the softlink will be local inside the dev directory, which is what you want. C |

Hi Mark, The instructions on the wiki do not include the extra bits for tinyx, they just deal with the pxa framebuffer. Follow the wiki instructions with the addition of enabling CONFIG_VT while recompiling a new kernel. what compiling problems are you facing? try disabling "console on virtual terminal" CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE. can you paste the output of the compile error. bhaskar.
